I've dated people from various "flavors" of Christianity. I would never out rule someone JUST because of their religion. However, if you did not respect my religious choices, you would get kicked to the curb, even if we have the same faith.

If a man is not on the same path and does not abide by the same guidelines that I do, how could we possibly be a good match? We could never truly have a complimentary relationship if I spend my whole life working toward something he doesn't even believe is real or true. And if he has a different religion, I would respect the difference, but I wouldn't support it....and what kind of wife could I be to him if I couldn't support what he's given his soul to? It's really that simple.
I agree with the premise. There will be enough disagreement between spouses about trivial issues. Religious tenets even among Protestant denominations are significant enough to think long and hard about marrying someone who doesn't share your most deeply held beliefs.

Can I just say that when two people who are of different religions are making it work it is pretty freaking rude to tell them exactly why you think it won't work and the decisions they have made about it are wrong?

BECAUSE IT IS.

Going back to the original post, I can't believe people would be in a committed relationship for five years and never discuss their religious beliefs and whether that would be a problem. My fiance and I are both non-practicing Catholics, but we have talked about raising our children Catholic.

I don't know the religions of the guys I've dated in the past, because we were never together long enough for it to be an issue...if it was, it would have been mentioned. I know, however, that I would not have wanted to date someone who was Muslim.

I've had bad experiences with some Muslim men (not dating), and their disrespect towards women. I'm sure not all Muslim men are like that, but it has just rubbed me the wrong way.

I would date someone with different religious or spiritual beliefs. However, I would NEVER convert for anyone.

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that. Mr. Pi Phi is very non-religious.

This sounds bad but religion is a major turn off for me.

I don't think it sounds bad at all (but of course, I agree with you). Honestly, I seriously doubt that I'd ever date someone who believed in god -- although a general "I think there might be something in the universe that's kinda godlike" would be okay.

Interesting considering your handle. (They were minor deities, but deities none the less!)

Understandable, but I'm glad that you know that not Muslim men are that way!

Is this something that has happened to you personally, or are you referring to someone in the thread? If it is the latter, then who?

Yeah, that's what I was wondering to. It sounds general, but GP could you clarify?
