I didn't say K-Mart. I made that name up, as I don't know the names of any "bigot gear" stores.

This is faulty logic. Just because you personally disagree with something doesn't mean that it is "protest any and everything." Don't you dare demean and reduce the perspectives of others; and the larger implications that exist and persist regardless of personal opinions.
|
Isn't this demeaning/reducing my perspective?
I do think that there are a lot of people that take a stand against things that (in my mind) don't necessarily need protesting. Just as they are allowed to protest, I'm allow to disagree. In my mind, when we overdo it with the (again, imo) bullshit protests, it cheapens the necessary ones.

Most certainly.

DUH..."bigot gear" stores are going to have bigoted things. This conversation isn't about "bigot stores."

I don't recall ever telling a minority group, especially of which I am not a member, that they are protesting something just to protest. I especially do not recall saying that after I have acknowledged that something can be considered offensive.

K_S, just sit back and think about the environment for young girls where they are expected to be "bad at math" and you through in the extra pressure of pretending not to be smart so that you will be pretty. These are real issues facing girls that effect their lifetime career options. It is absolutely offensive to have a shirt marketed to girls that reinforces the dumbing down of our girls.

Well, this isn't about proving the offense to everyone and justifying the response to the perceived offense (power minority groups tend to do that).
Not everyone has to find it offensive or worth speaking out. That is not to be confused with having no concept of the potential larger implications of such things and acting as though those who do find offense and/or spoke out are just bored during a slow work week. Bitches need hobbies!

I understand what you are saying, and I don't think he understands why we would be offended. Apparently some things are offensive enough to protest in his estimation...just not this piddling issue. The issue is more than meets the eye. Then again, aren't most. He's free to have his opinion, but I seriously don't get why he'd argue so vociferously against the opposite. Thus my post.

That's why women are a minority group. Minority status is more about power dynamics than about population size.
Minority groups tend to try to convince and justify things to people who disagree or may be unaware, including members of the minority group.

I hate it when someone catches me mid-edit. I apologize.

Knight_shadow began with an issue over how anyone could protest anything in such a context. If you don't like something then don't YOU do it but leave it for someone else to like it. Then knight_shadow veered off into having an issue with the line that people draw. In other words, it's now okay to protest such things but THIS doesn't cross the line and is unworthy of protest. LOL. That's why what we eat doesn't make everyone else defecate and these dynamics persist regardless of how we personally feel about them (or regardless of whether we notice them at all).

Our Honors/Pre-AP Geometry and Algebra II teachers showed this shirt to their students. The classes collectively (and majority female population) laughed and said:
"That's the dumbest thing we've ever heard."
"What idiot would buy that shirt?"
The boys collectively wondered if the makers had ever looked into a math class - the girls usually rank higher than the boys!

I do. I agree with someone who posted earlier -- I don't think the line has been crossed with this specific shirt.
I know that I have the ability to petition the malls, but my point is that I wouldn't do it for a situation like this.

I totally agree with all of this. knight_shadow, FTW.
eta: lol @ "I Felta Thigh"
