PLEASE don't listen to tent talk at Carolina. There is a lot of nasty competition during rush, especially with stereotyping the sororities, but what is important is what comes after rush. It always has baffled me that UNC sororities get into stereotypes, considering how smart UNC women are. You will find just about every major in every sorority, extensive community involvement, and a lot of sisterhood. There is no "this" house or "that" house. Furthermore, with the Greek community being small at Carolina, relative to other southern schools, you will end up having a lot of friends not only in other sororities but also outside the Greek system. So really forget about the stereotypes, because as soon as rush is over, so will everyone else. Find a home where you feel comfortable in your own skin.

Best of luck!

Carolina? I'm not in Carolina. :]

But the advice is still good.

Last night was.. Interesting. If anyone is interested, I can fill you in on the drama that happened after ranking yesterday, but lets just say it was the worst day of my life and I've never been in so much pain and I was yesterday.

Either way, I was excited to get my list of invites this morning as I didn't get a phone call last night. I didn't have time to freak out last night because of the drama, so.. Yeah. That'll happen tonight. Ha ha.

Anyway, I got my list and it said...

1. Lorelai
2. Paris
3. Lane

I was bummed. The houses I loved, hadn't loved me. Either way, from the advice I've read on Greek Chat, I picked myself up, put on my best smile and trotted over to my first event because these girls wanted me!

Lorelai: After getting here, I was paired up with a sweet girl who led me over to sit and we talked a while. She seemed very distracted and kept looking away while I was talking. I assumed she was looking for “signals” or something and brushed it off. I was picked up by another girl who showed me some boards, then we sat down and talked again. Both girls were super sweet and I loved the boards. All the events seemed so fun and the sisterhood seemed strong! I was taken to the tables where girls were working on projects and I doodled a little bit while making fun of my lack of creative skills. It was funny because the girl I was with was as bad creatively as I was. I was picked up by one more girl, who showed me other boards, then I left feeling like I could see myself being myself with these girls..

Paris: I thought about them a lot the past day and figured out that there was nothing actually wrong with Paris. I had ranked them low because I had listened to tent talk (and there was a lot of it) even though the girls were really sweet. Either way, I was picked up by a really sweet girl who I could picture myself being friends with and she showed me all the boards and events and sisterhood! It was amazing! I was falling in love with this house. I was taken to another room to the do philanthropy project and did a little bit while the girl I was with bombarded me with facts about their cause. I really love their philanthropy as I have a personal connection to it (somewhat) so I was loving all the info! I loved this house.

Lane: I wasn't looking forward to this house, honestly. I was so intimidated by all the uniform girls (tall, thin, and gorgeous. I actually told my boyfriend, “Picture photo-shopped girls in magazines. Now put them in the Lane house.”) that I was really confused as to why I was invited back. Either way, I was paired up by this awesome girl who I loved! We talked about our dogs and how much she missed hers, we then got on the boyfriend topic (we both kept trying to get off it, but we kept going back to it) and were laughing about how our boyfriends love video games. After that another girl came up and asked, “Would you like to go see our boards and the project?” I agreed, because so far, while it was really fun to relax and talk to this girl, I wanted to see the boards as well. I thanked them both and we made our way to the boards. Only thing is, we didn't actually go to them. We ended up stopping in the room where they were, but didn't go to them. I thought this was odd as the time was almost up, but I figured maybe they really liked me and just wanted to talk to me instead.

At the end of the day, I ranked like this:

1. Paris
1. Lorelai
1. Lane

I had one rec for Michel.
I had one rec for Richard.
I had one rec for Emily.
I had two recs for Lane.

When I got my schedule today it said exactly what I thought it would

1. Paris
2. Lorelai

Paris: I was excited to get to this house because it was my favorite yesterday but once inside I saw that it was one active to two PNMs. This bummed me out as I get intimidated and tend to be quiet. Well, that's what happened. The other PNM with me was SUPER chatty and asked every question I thought of, as I thought it. I said maybe ten words in the house and what I did say was pretty much ignored. I left feeling really sad and depressed.

Lorelai: I was paired up with this short, bubbly, adorable girl who started chatting me up like we'd been friends for years, and let me tell you, it felt like we had. Earlier in the week I met a girl who was EXACTLY like my best friend, down to the love of shiny objects. This girl was another aspect of my best friend, the part I could sit down with, no make up, sweats, and just chill and laugh. We took a tour of the house, and it was so cute! We went down to the skit room after that and I got chills as I watched it. I was loving every minute of this house, and was hoping it would never end. Her little came over after the skit and I got to know her a bit. I loved her too. I could see myself in this house the longer I sat here. We talked about how we needed to look past the superficial things like beauty, and who had the “fun” house and we needed to find the house that we felt at home in because if we felt like home, it would be fun. I felt myself tear up multiple times, thinking about all this house could offer me: a family, a sisterhood, a home..

I left knowing how I would rank them:

1. Lorelai
1. Paris

Tomorrow is Pref Night, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

Today is Saturday, August 21, 2010.

At 9:31am my phone started ringing. It was my RC. My heart sank. I knew what she was about to tell me, but said a tiny prayer (even though I'm not religious) that maybe she was calling me to tell me that the time had changed..

“Hey -name-, I'm called to tell you that the computer hadn't found any matches for you. Blah blah blah..” Everything she said after this point was a blur. I can't remember anything up until crawling back into bed with my boyfriend and crying. I was expecting this all week. I'm not the typical sorority girl, but after getting invited back twice, I thought there was a connection to Lorelai.

If you want to know my code, or want to know/guess my school, feel free.

I'm so sorry it didn't work out better for you. However, there may well be COB opportunities coming, so be very careful to not say anything negative about ANY of the chapters on campus. The girls do know each other and word gets around.

Talk again with your rush counselor now that maybe you can actually hear what she's saying (I totally understand your blur of empty words) and ask about COB. And, as I've said to others, start thinking right away about where you CAN get involved so you can start the healing process. Best of luck to you!

Emily: Either way, toward the end of the conversation the girl said “I'm not really a thinker. I believe what my dad tells me.” I was shocked, and honestly didn't know what to say.

FWIW...Could she have been talking about Myers Briggs? I happen to be a Thinker.

I am going to call or text my RC later and see if maybe she will know about any COR/COB going on at my school. Or Spring recruitment. Or both if they are the same thing..

Thank you for your kind words.

First of all, what is FWIW?

Second, I don't know.. Maybe. Doubt it though as she actually told me that she just thinks what her father tells her..
