Mountain Brook (Alabama) High School, Natalee Holloway's alma mater, had a Greek system, complete with tiers, until a few years ago. It was a pretty big deal in MB social circles, with the fraternities and sororities having been around since the 1920s, and it served as a feeder system for the big-name groups at Alabama and Auburn.

I know there were high school sororities in one smallish city in Nebraska. I don't know if it was just at the public HS, because there was just one HS and one Catholic HS (at the time, the city had about 30,000 people), but they were the only girls I knew in college who had belonged to HS sororities and it was very big in their town. I don't think they had greek letters, though. I don't know if they still exist, but they did in the late 70's-early 80's. This particular town, of course, had lots of girls who were greek in college and they were also legacies to multiple groups.

My teacher in high school wanted me to become apart of something called the del-teens. My mom didnt let me do it because of her thought of sororities at the time..and then i ended up being in a christian high school sorority before i got to college.

Amen to that.

When I hear of "Greek system" at ANY high school, I have to roll my eyes because they are NOT Greeks. They're just a bunch of silly kids in clubs who slap Greek letters on because they want to be just like the college kids -- only they're not.

Yep. The best thing those moms ever did for the kids there was to organize the open leadouts...the Greek system in high school was just begging for alcohol problems and emotional problems.

Granted the atmosphere is about as close to college as a public high school will be allowed to get. But the students are still just a bunch of 16 year olds.

I sincerely hope that these youth programs involve some sort of academic mentoring. Clearly spelling is an issue here.

I don't really think Fraternities and Sororities are necessary at the high school level. When I was in HS, we didn't have them. But we had plenty of cliques. And that's all a HS Fraternity or Sorority seems to be. There are plenty of worthwhile programs and organizations for kids to get involved in such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts....if you really look at them...they are as close to GLO's as you can get before college. (the similarities have been discussed here on GC somewhere)

There is a group of girls in LA that use my organization's name. We discovered them when creating a group on MySpace. We were stunned that the name "Sigma Psi Kappa" had already been we're the only chapter. We contacted them and let them know that Sigma Psi Kappa already exists and has existed long before they started themselves. What is worse is that they use the same colors and copied images from our website after claiming they didn't know the name was already taken. The eventually changed their name to Sigma Psi Kappa Jr Sorority, Inc. (which i highly doubt that they are Incorporated) But they are in no way affiliated with my organization.

There's a fraternity and sorority here in my high school. Beta Omega Psi Fraternity and Gamma Alpha Rho Sorority. The faculty here sometimes get a little iffy about them, but I'm glad that the two organizations do well and have so many scholars and community servants because they would X them in a heartbeat.

I mean this with all sincerity.

Its probably a good idea to remove any reference to Kappa Alpha Psi in your siggy, and to avoid posting that you love the org. One day it may come back to haunt you.

Perhaps you should stay focused on being a high school kid instead of worrying about joining a fraternity.
