The options are to contact the Greek Life office to inquire about COB opportunities, or to wait until the next formal recruitment period and try again, or find something besides Greek life to enjoy.

^^^I don't know how I'm just now seeing your sig. Appreciate that people think I know what I'm talking about. I'm only 27 and I feel like I just yammer on and on like the teachers in the Peanuts cartoons.
To further advance this thread, here's an exhaustive list of the things you are NOT doing when you rank a chapter low. I've read these all from PNMs on here:
Cutting
Picking
Voting
Shopping
Picking the ones I want
Choosing
Rejecting

I like the "selecting back-ups" terminology.

Don't know when, but it is an NPC directive, that Bid Day celebrations are manless.

Don't know if it was just my campus, but our bid days were manless and beer-less in 1991 when I was a freshman.

I was a freshman in 1986 so it must have been changed some time between then and 1991

Alcohol is a big no-no, but I think that in my day UCF was flirting with manless Bid Day. I'm pretty sure things haven't changed. The men aren't invited to Bid Day, but a lot of the Bid Day activities take place outside the houses/on the street at UCF. It's like a big block party, and the street belongs to the guys just as much as the girls.
It's not unusual for fraternity guys to wander up and down the street to say high to their girlfriends and sorority friends, and to congratulate them on Bid Day. They're not checking the new members out per se or participating in the activities. Unless Panhellenic banned them from the street, I'm not sure how this could be avoided. The sororities certainly aren't going to boot them off the sidewalk, especially when they're just chatting with their friends. The guys do clear out once the Bid Day activities move indoors, and are not part of the evening celebration when the sororities go to area restaurants/venues.

I was a freshman in 1979 and we definitely had a Bid Day function/mixer with boys and beer! But hey, we were all drinking and driving back then, too!

My university had something called "Sunday Fun Day". I think that recruitment rules (esp. re: length of the dry period/which day of the week is Bid Day, and rules about social functions inside fraternity houses) have changed in order to prevent this.
Basically how it worked was this: Bid Day was on Saturday, and that was reserved for women-only chapter bid activities. Sunday, each fraternity would host a party (often with bounce houses, water stuff, new sand in their volleyball courts, etc.) and sorority chapters would essentially parade around with their new members (often with the whole chapter in coordinated colors/outfits) going from fraternity to fraternity for a day rager in order to introduce the new members.
There was (is?) also something called Midnight Madness, which I think was the following weekend on Friday or Saturday night, and was the same idea--but now the fraternities would have new members (they called them pledges...) to introduce.

At my campus there were no guys on actual bid day. I pledged in 2008. A few days/weeks later we had a mixer/function. Last year I believe there was a campus wide bid day function the weekend after as well.

we had to wait until midnight on bid day to start drinking with the fraternities - and we couldn't wear letters, so all of us seemed to have circumspect bid day shirts (often in our colors, but not mentioning the actual sorority). This was 1992/1993/1994. I feel kind of old.

Our pref and bid day have always been same day on a Sunday. Bid night didn't even START until 6 or 6:30 sometimes. By the time you were all the way done with bid day activities (actual bid day, celebrating at your house, pictures) it was usually like 10:30. And everyone had class the next day. There was no "unofficial bid night mixer party with guys" to be had. EVERYONE was tired. Your first opportunity to really do any sort of partying was that Thursday.
