My brother attended UMBC, and their mascot is a golden retreiver. Someone donated a lot of money to the school for them to change the mascot.

I go to the University of Tampa, and even though we're the pretty mundane Spartans, our mascot's costume looks like a bananna...

I attend Boston University - home of the TERRIERS.

OK - now I understand that the Boston Terrier is a fairly distinct breed of dog or whatever . . . but seriously, our mascot is a tiny little dog. Not that killer. The actual mascot is this cartoon dog, trying to look all tough, but it's still a 6lb short-hair terrier. Weak - but not as weak as the MIT Engineers or Harvard Crimson, which just suck as mascots.

The Crimson, by the way, have one of those sorta-fuzzy big-headed suits that a guy wears around of sporting events . . . no, not of anything crimson: it's a suit of John Harvard, puritanical 'founder' of Harvard University. He looks like the old Padres friar guy, really stupid looking with a cane and tall-ass top hat, and everything.

The University of Iowa is the Hawkeyes - which actually can refer to a couple of things apparently, but we'll just leave it at that.

And finally, I believe University of Missouri-Kansas City is the Fighting Kangaroos - just bizarre, almost cartoonish.

LMAO at the Fighting Artichokes, Lambkins and BUBBLES!!!!!

Our mascot isn't too exciting either - we're the Rattlers. But there is a local all-boys Catholic school whose mascot is the Buttons.

Apparently, the school was founded a few years after ours (like a little brother school) and so they were named the Buttons because they were baby Rattlers. (There is still much discussion as to whether a button is a baby rattlesnake or the actual rattler at the end of the tail of a grown rattlesnake but whatever...)

Either way, they are either baby snakes or snakes' butts, neither of which sounds all that fierce to me - but they are DARN PROUD of their BUTTONS!!!

And back to high schools, there is the Westminster (Colorado) "Farmers."

LOL, the Terrapins, who are the "Terps" for short, seem to often be referred to as the "Twerps" by their rivals.

Southern Illinois University's mascot is the Saluki. It's some kind of weird egyptian dog that nobody has ever heard of before.

Hey now, that's my mascot too We're the Rose-Hulman Fighting Engineers. Our mascot is Rosy, an elephant. My high school is the Fighting Cardinals, scary! They painted a cardinal in a school sweater(like they wore in the 50's) in a fighting stance baring his teeth. A guy on the school board thought that was dumb, since cardinals don't have teeth, so they painted over the teeth, and now his mouth is closed.

Funny enough way back in the day the Cornhuskers used to be called the BUG EATERS. I remember listening to News Talk 1110 AM radio and they had some lady who was a HUSKER fanatic and had all this trivia. I know Herby Husker has always been the mascot, but the nickname is quite interesting. I think it had to deal with the Great Depression and the grasshoppers that once swarmed the crops. I could be WAY off on that one but it sounds logical.

I agree. I can remember the UNL being referred to as the Bug Eaters & I think that your reasoning makes sense

Northwestern University's mascot used to be the Fighting Methodists, since the school was started by a group of methodists. Thankfully, the university eventually figured out that they weren't that scary, and adopted the Wildcats (his name is Willie!) instead.

Well, my college is the cougar, so that's pretty normal. My sister's school was the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (Catholic school, go figure). It's a dude on a horse with a lance and a sword. One of her homecoming t-shirts said "oh what a knight." I always thought that was cute.

But the craziest mascots come from the high schools in my hometown of Columbia, SC. OK, first is the Blazers. What is that?? The picture is of a horse or something. I guess it's supposed to be a trailblazer or something. What's worse is their colors are purple and silver. And of course, being the Blazers, there were always marajuana-slanted jokes. Then there's the Lower Richland Diamonds. Ooo, what mascot strikes fear into the heart of men...? And we cannot forget the Eau Claire Shamrocks and the Heathwood Hall Highlanders. It's a guy in a kilt. He looks like the janitor from the Simpsons! (And the HIGHlanders garner a lot of weed jokes, too.)

Here are a few others from Indiana, first off, the Indiana Hoosiers, I mean, they're the hometown team and all, but Hoosier is just a funny word, and has many interesting explanations! Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The original Notre Dame is in France, why the Irish then? The ISU Sycamores, woohoo, we're named after a tree

I can beat that, I go to Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green KY and our mascot is BIG RED.. he looks like that purple guy from McDonalds, but he is red.. he is a blob.. actually it could be a she.. there was an ESPN commercial when we made it to the NCAA Tourney and Big Red was in front of a mens room and women's room trying to decide where to go.. we don't know ourselves. He is supposed to embody the spirit of Western in each student (is that why we won our conference in Football and went to the NCAA tourney in basketball and nonone showed up to the games except alum!)

MTSU is the Blue Raiders and our mascot is "Lightning" the Pegasus (the winged white horse). It's fairy unique, and I think it's cute. I have the stuffed animal.
