I was in color guard (silk squad) in HS and we went to a band competition where another HS's silk squad whipped off the long skirts they were wearing to reveal leotards & fishnet stockings. We were all like OMG WHAT A BUNCH OF SLUTS. Nowadays, of course, they'd be considered really tame.
The ironic thing about this is that the girl who would become my big was the captain of the other school's squad and she was definitely on the prudish side. Ha ha.

I didn't like the dance team outfits posted because I agree that they were ugly, rather than immodest. ETA:the college dance outfits, not the Ohio State ones. A couple of the Ohio State ones are immodest.
But they don't seem to match what I think of college dance teams wearing at games when they perform. If I remember correctly the UGA team wears black spandex-y type pants and a red UGA fitted- maybe kind of sparkly-shirt. (I realize that sounds wretched, especially to you Auburn fans).
Whereas the photos in the link seems way more what high school flag corps wear. ETA: really just UCF, Auburn and Ole Miss in review. The others seemed either too ugly to be used for anything or about right for a college dance team.
We actually have a law in Georgia about lewd dancing that makes chaperoning high dances particular interesting.
About OSU: I think that the campus standard for the event is probably most important in determining "appropriateness." While I might prefer that it be old-fashioned costumes and Broadway-type dances, if this is the occasion where they break out of their stereotypes and go crazy together, that could be fun too. You just wouldn't want your group to be Pussycat Dolling it up while everyone else was all Riverdance. (ETA: At OSU, not all of them we inappropriate in any area: dress, moves, whatever.)

Not at all similar, IMHO. Kappa was wearing, plain and simple, lingerie. Now, they looked great in the lingerie and the clip certainly held my attention, but it sure didn't counter any stereotypes about sorority girls. When I saw that bit, I wasn't thinking "What talented dancers they are!"
I don't mind telling you that I've danced on a university stage in lingerie, so I'm far from straightlaced about these matters in general. But I do agree that when you're representing a group that is supposedly NOT all about being hot booty and attracting frat guys, you ought to think about what messages you're sending. I got the message that being hot booty has a whole lot to do with being a Kappa at OSU.

I am with Texas Beta and a few others on this one.
Being a talented dancer doesn't get you real far in life if this is the kind of dance you do- and it certainly is not the sort of behavior one would see in a fine Texas lady in any era (or a respectable woman from any place for that matter.)
That is just common sense. What kind of respectable guy would marry any girl who behaved like that in public?
This kind of exhibition is nothing new- it is just that we now all get to see it broadcast on the internet.
Personally I could care less- people can do as they please. But I do find it amusing the degree to which many will attempt to justify this kind of behavior and defend it- especially considering it is done in a context that degrades an entire GLO by association.

I loved AXO, DG and Alpha Phi (but I'm probably biased.)

I loved them all; each sorority was lots of fun to watch. And I have to say that the KDs have the cutest li'l tushies!

My niece dances competitvely. She's only 7, so of course the routines are pretty tame. However, when I travel to see some of her competitions and look at what some of the junior high and high school girls are wearing/doing...
It makes my husband very uncomfortable to go to my niece's recitals and competitions, b/c he feels awkward watching those girls doing those moves knowing they're all of 15 years old.
My niece will be performing at Nationals next month, so we'll be seeing a variety of young women from all across the country. Won't surprise me in the least to see some very suggestive performances from young girls all across the country.
If that's the kind of stuff that wins awards in competitions while you're still a tween or teen, suppose its no big shock that the college girls would do the same thing. (Not saying that I agree w/it...just seems to be the way it is in the dance world these days.)

The state of TX even had a bill introduced to outlaw sexually provocative dance teams and cheerleaders in public schools (it died on the floor, I believe).
If all of the sororities agreed to a certain type of dance for the competition, then it would remove the pressure to be more suggestive. Of course, this is not likely to happen if everyone is happy with the status quo. I happen to think that it is not in the best interests of the sororities as a whole to present themselves in that manner - I wouldn't want my daughters to participate in an event that so obviously is geared to a sexually suggestive format. I also think the Broadway-type competitions are also more artistically challenging overall, and I'd much rather sit through an evening of those than hours of pelvic thrusts and gyrations. JMHO -

Well...at least DG won. Theirs was the most traditional dance on the floor in that particular competition. Definitely the cleanest by far. And I'm sorry but...the most difficult, in my opinion. They should've won. Some of the others might've been more entertaining to those of us who are used to watching BET and MTV, but the fact remains that that Broadway routine was more impressive. They also had the most traditional costumes. So at least the judges aren't impressed by the ability to hump air in underwear.
Some of the dances were just hip hop dances and honestly weren't that big of a deal, especially considering the kind of moves they COULD have included in the routine. But yeah, Kappa and KD's dances did not do much for my opinion of Kappa and KD as organizations...well, at least not those PARTICULAR chapters. You don't do stuff like that in the name of your organization. At the club? Great. Right after someone presents you on stage as an organization? Not so much.

This reminded me of an incident I know I have written about elsewhere. It involved a pledge of Gamma Phi. She was hauled up before standards because she had competed in a wet t-shirt contest in her letters. Her response? "But I won!" Yes, she had even beaten the Chi O - LOL

Nice.
I've heard "What you do on vacation is your own business" before.
Lies.
Personally I'd think if she is confident enough to do it, whatever...just don't bring my letters into it.

Do you feel this way about all of them? For everyone that seemed stripper-ish or music video bimbo, there seemed to be a group that was okay. It was kind of a group by group thing.
But again, I think the standards for everything about GLOs vary a lot campus by campus. I wouldn't ever expect to see Wet T-shirt contest become acceptable anyplace, nor would I want them to be, but dances in a variety show seems like they are going to be better left to local chapter standards in most cases.
I wonder if those chapters are going to hear from their national orgs before next years show?
