Maybe the oldster was drunk...you never know. You must be thinking of the Hollywood types and people north of Santa Barbara when you say bleeding heart or hippie. You're more likely to see people with W stickers on the backs of their cars in this area.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought you said that this older gentleman (who is from Georgia) called the group from California, "Yankees?" Since you were in London, and that's what Brits call those from the USA, wouldn't you think maybe that's why he said that?

No, he said it in the "southern" fashion, not the "I'm educated and trying to adapt to british culture" fashion. That was quite evident. My response to him was, "Yes sir, we're from California, but last time I checked yankees lived north of the Mason-Dixon line."
And I say this because their entire group did next to nothing but whine about how small everything was, talk about tractors(no joke here - one of them even had a tractor magazine), and talk crap about my students (they were trying to do it behind their/my backs, but I heard the whole conversation and called them on the fact they they were a group of adults who were whining about a group of kids that were just "different").

It was rather ironic how sweet they all became when they needed me to translate for them in Germany and France though.

I know what you mean, but that sentence really sounds funny to me.

Although I do know of parts of Florida that seem like a Third World country, I'm pretty sure it (Florida) is part of the U.S.A.

My mother grew up in Connecticut, and she gets so mad when anyone that's not from New England gets called a yankee. NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD - not yankee!...to her at least

Not trying to defend adults for picking on innocent children, but regarding the tractors ... everyone has a hobby. For some people, that's their hobby. It's really no weirder than any other hobby. (I mean, adults collecting dolls and stuff is kinda creepy when you think about it.) So don't bash the tractors. Personally not my thing, but I have a relative who is very into his tractors and makes a LOT of money with the tractor-collecting stuff ... it's a big business

I am going to avoid any Yankee/Dixie controversy and just say that Savannah has no open container law. So you can go to a bar, grab a beer to go, and barhop down the street to your heart's content. I've heard it's lots of fun.

What other cities have that, besides New Orleans obviously, and any SEC school on gameday? I'd like to know so I can go there.

Shinerbock actually cracks me up.

But Bobby is my homie and I'm willing to steal your hubcaps and pour sugar in your gas tank if you keep saying he's from Jersey.

He is from Jersey. He is a big burly italian with a barb wire tattoo. He can usually be seen in the club with spiked hair and glow sticks.

This was one of the few teens on the trip, not an adult, so it's doubtful that he was collecting tractors. It was more of a catalog really from what my students told me. They were all shocked that someone would bring a tractor catalog all the way to Europe instead of just appreciating the sights. You'll also note that I wasn't bashing tractors or tractor collecting, just the fact that if all you can do is complain about everything when you are in a foreign country and say how much better everything is back home, why not just stay home?

Shiner - Bobby is so not Jersey...

And still, no one has answered my original question...are Californians yankees or not?

I think Californians are a breed of their own ... you've got your Southerners, your Yankees, your Texans, your Midwesterners, your Southwesterners, your Rocky Mountain people, your Californians, your Hawaiians, and your Alaskans. Those are pretty much your regions.

But if a Californian moved to Georgia, then people who didn't know they were from CA would probably just call them a Yankee at first as a blanket term for American-obviously-not-from-the-South. Then, unable to use the Yankee term, people would probably just call the Californian a transplant instead of a Yankee transplant.
