I'm not sure if this would count as an awesome question or not since I'm not familiar with the sorority game, but from my own personal perspective, I'd be curious to know the following:
What was it that made you guys choose Charity 31337 as the one to do philanthrophy for?
Nice, open-ended question that could potentially lead off into more discussion, I would think.

If you haven't asked already, you can ask "Why did you choose to join XYZ?" When I got stuck, I asked that question...lol. I also talked about their major and their classes....mainly b/c I am still undecided on a major!
Just talk about anything...where they went to school, hobbies, and stuff like that. You might be talking to different people tonight, so you just might have to ask the same questions over and over (and answer their questions over and over again!) lol
Have fun tonight!

I don't think I would ask that question, but if you haven't been told much about it, philanthropy is always a good topic - ask them what it is and what they do to support it.
I agree that asking why someone joined their org. is a good question.
My advice? Ask them about what is important to you. If you want to know if they have a Bible Study - ask. If you want to know if there are sisters involved in <insert student organization here> - ask. If you want to know how much they party - ask.
Some of the best conversations that I had during recruitment this years started off as a question the PNM didn't think she should ask but really wanted to know the answer to.

As a recruitment advisor, one question I love to hear a PNM ask about is anything to do with life after college in our organization. Showing an interest in belonging to the organization for a lifetime is a terrific way to signal what kind of member you will be. I agree with the above advice. You should ask about just about anything you are really interested in. I love philanthropy round as it seems to be one of the rounds with the best conversations. At least that has been my expereience. Good luck!

You can always ask questions about the specifics- what kinds of events they do, if they do fundraisers or personally volunteering or both, what their favorite activities have been, what is planned so far for the upcoming year, etc.
A caution about asking why they chose xyz philanthropy: most sororities have national philanthropies. Many will also have a local philanthropy that they support, so that can be something to get into- if they do anything locally and what they do for the national & local.
Just my thoughts :-)
Good luck!!

Day two is over!
So day two is over and I am exhausted and a little stressed-- I don't know if I made such a good impression tonite...maybe I'm just tired and jumping to conclusions....well... here I go!
I got invited back to all four that I wanted....so that was a GREAT thing...I feel soooo lucky because not everyone else was as fortunate.
first I went to MAC-- they were awesome and their philanthropy was super-cute. I got to talk to a good number of girls and they all acted like they knew me, which made me feel special! Conversation was not awkward at all and when the party was over I definitley didn't want to leave. I could definitley see myself here.
next I went to CLINIQUE-- yet another group of very awesome girls. They were so energetic and dressed so CUTE! I talked to a few of the same girls and some different ones too. I really liked this house.
The third house I visited was LANCOME-- my opinion about this house kind of changed tonight...the girls are sweet, but their party was unorganized and there were many MANY awkward silences. This definitley influenced my decision...how could it not when I have to narrow down so many houses tonight?
finally I visited STILA-- yay! I really liked them tonite. The girls are really put together and all seemed very interested in me. I really like this house, but something happened that made me think I might not be invited back: this girl came up and introduced herself and I said "hi, i met you yesterday" all happy, and she got this really mean face and walked away.....that was weird and I seriously don't hope this hurts my chances on getting to go to pref night at this house. Maybe you all will have some input about it. Other than that one girl, I totally bonded with all the other girls and this house is still oneof my top choices,
So i had to narrow it down to two houses and this was really hard for me....so I chose to narrow it down to MAC and STILA with CLINIQUE a close third. Hopefully everything works out. ALSO-- my roomie was cut pretty harshly today, and was taking it hard, but has decided to keep going through recruitment. She is hoping for LANCOME and CLINIQUE for pref tomorrow.
So I'm kind of confused as of what is expected from a rushee during pref. night. I know it is really emotional for the girls, but I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to do or say to make the best impression...your advice would be the GREATEST! I'll update you guys tomorrow...hopefully with good news!

Whoops, a little late with the philanthropy, sorry!
For pref night... this is the night for you to get a glimpse of what it would like to be in that sorority. Chances are you will wind up in one or two deeper conversations- not playing social butterfly like the other parties. The women will want to show you why they chose their sorority and what it means to them, and therefore what it could mean to you. On your part, you need to relax a little and just take it all in! Find out why they joined. Find out why they stayed. Find out their favorite aspects, as well as maybe some things they find difficult. Tell them more about yourself and if you're comfortable, why you are interested in their group & Greek life. This is the time you picture yourself in that group and try to figure out what it'd be like! Enjoy yourself- it's a very different mood than the other parties, more on the serious side.
That's how we did it at my school, anyway. It very well could be different there, who knows? But in any case, this will be your last chance to talk to the women and get a feel for the groups before signing your pref card. Have fun with it, and good luck!

Hi there! Pref night is a very special night. Every group that has invited you to pref basically thinks you'd make a good sister. Girls will basically be trying to make you see that you would be good for XYZ. Really listen to what the girl who is rushing you is saying because she really wants you to be a part of her chapter. She'll most likely share some favorite experiences and touching memories. Just GO with the flow of conversation.
Some general pref advice (especially if you're torn between chapters):
Really PAY ATTENTION to the pref ceremonies at each chapter. Do the words strike a chord with you? Can you see yourself participating in the SAME ceremony next year with tears in your eyes b/c you mean every word? Think about next years rush. Can you see yourself rushing PNMs alongside these women?
Ask yourself: Could I see myself coming here at 3 am when my car has broken down and my boyfriend just broke up with me and I'm in sweats and crying hysterically? Crazy scenario but you want the chapter that you can see being there for you in time of need like that.

Maybe that girl who made the face to you was just startled because she couldn't remember who you were. Anyway, it sounds like a pretty lousy reason not to invite you back!
I hope you get invited back to your top two!! I loove Mac makeup, so I guess I'll root for them...

I've been rooting for MAC all along so I'm happy to hear that you like them
I know someone mentioned something along the lines of it's the house that you can see yourself with at 3 am, crying, in sweats after your boyfriend broke up with you...and it's true. That's the kind of girls you want as sisters.
Good luck!

Pref night was amazing!
I'm done with preference night. What an amazing, emotional night! First of all, I was invited back to MACand STILA....I was sooooo lucky to get my top choices!! This recruitment has been a dream! Here are all the juicy details:
MAC-- The first house I went to. Now I finally know what you all meant when you were talking about the feeling. The girl I talked to was so genuine and I could tell she really wanted to see me tomorrow at bid day. These girls are all so beautiful and put together, on the inside (most importantly) and out. I could really see myself calling these girls at 3am crying about something. Their ceremony was beautiful..candles and singing. My eyes teared up and my throat got really sore. Definitley my first choice.
STILA-- I thought that they were going to be my favorite house, but like you guys all said, pref really does change everything. These girls were all really sweet and seemed to be really interested in me, but their pref didn't seem to have as much feeling and emotion, and that's what I wanted. Some of the conversation was forced. This is still a great group and I think I would definitley give them a try if I don't get a bid from MAC
SO on my preference card my first choice was MAC and my second choice was STILA!!!! I'll find out at 12pm tomorrow and update ASAP! BTW-- I just realized that I wore MAC eyeshadow tonight....maybe it was meant to be!

WOO HOO! Glad you liked Pref and I am hoping you become a MAC Mama! When it comes to makeup, I am all about MAC, I must admit!
Did your roommate get invited to Clinique and Lamcome for Pref???
