CU fraternities defy deferred rush rules, go off campus

i think i said this elsewhere...if the university was saying that you couldn't join any organizations your first semester, then fine. seperating out one group from another is not right.


on to the millersville topic...i really don't think that it would fly under npc rules to have some groups allowed to take first semester freshmen...and others not. first of all, when do you do formal recruitment? in the fall, in the spring or both? what about the people who want to check out all of their options? they will want to wait until all of the groups have recruitment.

i agree that greek organizations need to evolve, but i don't think that they should cave to every demand the schools make (no matter how little it seems). by trying to please everyone, we tend to please no one. i also sure as hell hope that people continue to fight for things they disagree with...because that is why we are free to make choices. in the "real" world, people who have difficulty with policies at their place of employment can and do "fight" for what is best. they don't take temper tantrums, or stage protests outside of their offices, but present their concerns in a professional manner. they do what they can to get things to be better. if they truly feel like they can not live with whatever the company has decided, they are pretty likely to leave and find a company whose philosophy is a better fit.

recruitment at millersville is done on a semester by semester schedule. The first few weeks of each semester is open rush, followed by a mandated maximum of a six week association/pledge period.

I too do not see how they could distinguish which groups could take on freshmen and which couldn't, but the administration seems to have it in their mind that they can. And we're trying to be as mature and professional about our concerns/requests/problems as we can, but it becomes rather disheartening when the administration is unwilling to listen to anything from us.

Perhaps it makes more sense to say that college is about learning and growing as a person. You could also argue that college is a time to get involved and learn leadership skills and through these things we grow and change.

College is not about 'activism' per se, but it is a time to be active, to grow, and to prepare for life in a somewhat safe environment. Just a thought.

I think you took my comment towards activism in a negative manner. it was not ment to be taken as such, but rather that college is the time in a persons life where they have the ability to use what they've learned to take an active stance on issues and cause change.

I hate that universities are trying to tell orgs when and how they are allowed to recruit members....

While I didn't pledge until I was a sophomore, I would have been mad if they had told me that I COULDN'T join these certain orgs my freshman year.

I realize that's not really on topic, but whatever.

I think rush should be determined by the orgs on campus.... NOT by an over-controlling university admin.

It sounds like the Adm. is a foundering ship that is rudderles and no true captain at the helm.

What ever way the wind blows so they go, well so to speak. If they had any real sense, they would sit down and try to work out problems instead of a knee jerk reaction of dictating.

It just seems, from reports over the years, the Greeks have shot themselves in the foot without the Adm.s help.

Losing Chapters and then Houses helps no one.

This is a beautiful Campus in a beautiful setting that had some very nice houses at one time.
