This is true and it's definitely not the yucky part. We are pretty much trying to gentrify or artsify all the yucky parts here (with mixed results). Something I still can't get over, though, is how you cross the street and are in a totally different neighborhood.

Yes, but if I recall my Pittsburgh geography correctly 33's neck of the woods is actually the East "End". And then there's the West "End"**.

The North and South have legitimate "sides", though.

**What encompasses the West End, anyway? I've heard of it, but I don't know if I've ever actually been there.

A man I used to work with grew up in an area called Charlestown and I recall him saying that it was a really rough place. Are you familiar with it? I am guessing it is a suburb of Boston.

Actually, now Charlestown is more of a young affluent suburb. It's right by the water, and there are quite a few condos out there for young professionals. I know the reputation used to be tougher, but that has changed quite a bit over the years.

Here's some trivia for you: Charlestown produces more bank robbers than any other square mile in the country.

The West End is McKees Rocks, Crafton, Sheridan - that area. For some reason (gee, I wonder why? ), Sewickley & that side of the river isn't included.

It's also one of the cheapest Manhattan neighborhoods for recent college grads because of all the post-war high-rise apartment buildings. One complex, named Normandie Court, is known to young people as "Dormandie Court" because of all the college-aged kids who live there. People build walls in their apartments to accomodate more roommates--which means even lower rents. The UES was cheaper than some of the outer borough neighborhoods I looked at recently.

Providence, RI, has an East Side--which is where Brown and RISD are. It's one of the city's most affluent neighborhoods. It cannot be mistaken, however, for East Providence--which is an entirely different city.

I wouldn't go to East St. Louis or East Palo Alto after 3 PM.

The South and East sides of Jacksonville are beautiful. That is where the beaches, country clubs, and nice malls are.

It is the North side that gives me chills. I don't even like going over there during the day, let alone at night.

It amazes me how these sides of Jax are so different. It is like separate planets.

Toronto's "west side" is actually referred to as the west end and Toronto's "east side" is actually the east end. All that means is, it is in the west part of the city or the east part of the city. Also, the same gores for the north end of the city.

East San Antonio and East Austin are not the best parts of town (though in S.A. south, east and west are yucky)
