But if you have 120 friends on facebook, itd take forever to add them all again when rush is over...GOING THRU EVERY SINGLE RUSH (fall spring, years in a row).
Life would be easier if you would just change ur name and picture during rush.

I was a Rho Gamma last spring during our Formal Recruitment (we have deferred recruitment here) and I also had a facebook account. What some of us as Rho Gams did was share friends lists - just start adding everyone you know on facebook even if they're not a super close friend. I go to a small school but I had just about everyone from all the chapters along with a lot of non-greeks as well, and then I hid my clubs and I unjoined groups to keep my identity secret.

It worked pretty well - when we gave the PNMs a survey at the end of recruitment they were pretty much split between my own chapter and two others that are similar type of women, based on personality.

I don't think you should be completely anxious and neurotic about whether or not they find out who belongs to who, especially if you tried to hide your identity. Some PNMs asked boys, mostly members of my boyfriend's fraternity who I don't talk to often and didn't know I was disaffiliated, and they told them. If they really want to find out your identity they probably will.

Even if the girls dont get them at the library, they're free to everyone on campus and I'm sure they could find one if they REALLY wanted to know.
EXACTLY!
Ok so maybe I'm not 100% sure on what facebook is, (i'm too young to feel old!) but I don't get the big deal. If a psycho pnm wants to figure out who you are they will! Shouldn't there be responsibility on the PNMs not to be psycho stalking their RCs affiliation and blabbering it? Good grief, if you search my name on the internet you get sorority affiliation pretty easy. This was a great rule in 1982 before the internet, now...well maybe it needs to be worked on.

positive results

I've seen a number of organizations have success using the Facebook as part of recruitment. In fact; we had a group start up this year on the basis of the Facebook, so it have a positive effect on our Greek System as well.

I'm not gonna lie, I have to disagree w/ a few ppl on the whole Facebook issue!

Yeah, definitely make your account private and change your name and hide your clubs but I'm sorry, deactivate the whole account that someone has had for X amount of time just cuz of being a recruitment counsellor for all of two weeks or whatever?

While keeping a counsellor's affiliation under wraps is important, I think it's excessive to expect people to rearrange all their stuff (like online w/ Facebook, LiveJournal, Webshots and whatever) just for a short period of disaffiliation.

I know to those who eat, sleep & breathe greek life (even if they graduated like 20 years ago) this is HUGE to them but I think the rest of us do have a life outside of the greek scene and it doesn't reign supreme and supercede everything else we may be doing (online, offline or whatever).

Personally, my position on Panhel and other 'sorority matters' aren't 'priority' over the rest of my life as an individual and I'm not about to rearrange my whole life (and NO i'm not saying that Facebook is my life, but I'm not going to rearrange everything I may be involved in) b/c some sketchbag PNM wants to know what sorority I'm in.

Besides, what kind of sketchy PNM has time to stalk down every recruitment counsellor through all of their online affiliations just to find out their affiliation?! If they really want to trace me that badly go ahead, they'll likely find out either way if they're that determined (and bored).

Just a respectful agree to disagree.

Two years ago 2 PNMs drove to a nearby town to find copies of our school's yearbook from previous years to look at which sororities the Rho Gammas were in, just so they could come back and tell everyone.

I'm not panhel so someone help me out. What good does it do to find out the Rho Chis/Rho Gammas? Or is it just the thrill of the chase?

They are supposed to be neutral. If the PNMs know which sorority they are in they may:
1 Pick that one because they like their counselor
2 Feel obligated toward that one even though they may like another one better

Half of the reason these girls get so crazy about it, is probably because it is supposed to be forbidden. Otherwise they probably would not care.

We had one PNM last year who sat with her Gamma Chi for 2 hours trying to figure out what she was before she signed her bid card. She would just make comments and try to gauge her reaction or ask questions that only members of the sorority were likely to know. I didn't realize what was going on (why she was taking so long) or I would have probably put her with another Counselor so she would sign the d**n card. The counselor broke down in tears after the girl left--she had put the other sorority. Which was funny because everything that she liked about the counselor were generally traits found in the other chapter.

did that make sense or did I just ramble too much

I think this whole issue isn't just about facebook but about how effective hiding PX identity really is.

I mean, if I was a PX and one of my PNMs seemed like a perfect fit for XYZ because of the XYZs I know, I certainly wouldn't want her to go with my chapter instead and be miserable, just because she liked me. My sorority is best for ME. That doesn't mean I want everyone to join it. I want the women who would be happy there to join it. We've had people who joined because they felt beholden to their mom or another sister and they didn't have much fun.

If you're really committed to the health and happiness of the Greek community you should be able to say that your sorority might not be for everyone, but they can find their home somewhere else - AND MEAN IT. In letters or out, PX or not.

i love facebook

Just wanted to add something. First, our school is only about 15% girls, which adds up to around 500. Of them, 80ish are already affiliated. Because we were a colony in the spring, no one knew was really looking at us, but moreso at the other two. Sure we had signs and banners in the student center and even in the bathrooms, but nothing was as effective as facebook. We advertised a "Death by Chocolate Party" with time and place and one of our girls sent out invitations to every girl who wasn't affiliated. Close to 50 accepted the invitation and around 14 actually showed up. Our colony only had 22 members at the time so for 14 to show up is amazing! Three ended up joining! It worked really well for us. As for the fall, I know everyone is really into it so we will just hide our accounts.

What is everyone gonna do about this site? If the people are so worried about PNM's finding out through facebook, they could easily register on here and find a previous post with your affiliation...
