It goes for other slang words as well. Rappers call each other "X" sometimes, with no offense taken. Someone outside that group calling them "X" may wish he/she hadn't. If you're in doubt to whether you should use this word or not, don't. Just my thoughts...

I say redneck jokingly to some friends....or when the straight out hick KY accent comes out I'll say "man, I'm such a redneck". But I do take offense to it when someone from the north or out west call me a redneck, or my friends.
Just b/c I'm KY don't assume I'm a redneck, wear no shoes, and have a horrible education. Which to me, is what that word means when used negatively.

They are not white trash, as a matter of fact they are some of the nicest men I have ever met.

The Boro has some fine looking men!!!! My best friend is a proud example of that.

Rednecks are just country people who live a simple life and like it that way.
White trash is what you see on COPS. Beer stained t-shirt, cut off jean shorts and worn the hell out trucker hats.

If you're driving from Chicago to Michigan- look out at the crappy housing in Indiana- lots of rednecks.
Columbus, Indiana- lots of rednecks around there as well (my sis's ex husband is from around there, scarey place)
hillbillies are found from the bluffs along the Ohio river down into appalachia (sp?).

there are also a few in Medina County which is about 30-40 minutes from Cleveland.

I grew up in a rural area of Cali, and the insult out there was Okie. And I never heard any of my white friends refer to themselves as Okies at all, not even in jest. At least not in mixed company.
Something to ponder: Are there lots of people of color in the audience of Blue Collar TV? Because we all know what the codewords really mean. Do you watch it?

they are comfy, but i only wear them to the lake or to work in the yard.
they serve a purpose.

The word "redneck" is rarely used in my area. White people who are percieved as being lower class are called "hoosiers". Sometimes it is considered as offensive, sometimes not. It depends on the sender and reciever, even if the sender is non-white.

I'd have to say that, up here, the term "Redneck" is pretty much a insulting term applied to people that are ignorant, racist, violent, and trash. It is pretty much inter-changable with "Hill Billy" or "White Trash".. although "White Trash" usually only applies to urban dwellers.

I have to agree with this. "Redneck" "Hillbilly", "Whitetrash" are all used inter-changably as derrogatory terms.
I think that they shouldn't be used at all. Even if one is trying "to take back the word", it is still seen as a derrogatory term. Same with Trailer Park Trash (TPT).

I spent the first 18 years of my life trying to escape "Rednecks," 'White Trash," and "Good Old Boys."
No matter how you cut it, it's all the same.
