Just out of Curiosity, what was the story behind the "Louie Louie" Controversy?

One of the great urban legends of the sixties was that Louie Louie had "dirty" and sexualy explicit words.
It didn't.
But you simply couldn't understand them and a lot of ministers preached against the song from their pulpits, etc.
It was a mess.
ETA, here are the words to the song according to a Louie Louie webpage. They are essentially the way I remember receiving them from the publisher in 1964. The words in ( ) are the way I remember them instead of the underlined words -- but the differences are reallly minor.
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Me fine little girl she waits for me
Me catch a ship across the sea
Me sail the ship by me all alone
Never see how (it never go down) I make it home
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Three nights and days I sail the sea
(Me) Think of girl (oh,) constantly
Upon the ship I
know (dream) she there
I smell the rose up in her hair
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Me see Jamaica, the moon above
(It) Won’t be long me see me love
(Me) Take her in my arms and then
(I) Tell her I never leave again
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Louie Louie
Oh no, me gotta go
We gotta go now
I said, We gotta go now
Let’s hustle on outta here (Don't recall this line at all)
Let’s go!
