I didn't even know you could plant carnations. (At home, I mean, with any degree of success.)

Oh, sure you can! But if your area gets really hot in the summer, the best kind you can buy are the mini-carnations available in pots at Home Depot and Lowe's.

And the house is about 4000 square feet!

Same here. My grandma had irises in her garden and I loved them (she wasn't a Kappa, she didn't even go to school). I'm so happy that we now have a house, I planted a whole row of irises in the fall, and I'm hoping some of them will bloom!

I've always loved red roses, heck, I've always loved roses. Never been brave enough to try to actually grow them, though.

Carnation, I might be back on here soon asking how/when to grow them...... can you imagine having pink carnations, real ones, in the front yard?!?!

A lot of people don't like our carnations, but I love them! Sometimes, if you don't call well in advance for wine ones all they will have on immediate order is the wine and white variegated ones.

LOL! A Phi Mu friend actually asked our 4th daughter that yesterday with a big grin....I said, 'Wait until recruitment--we'll see!" Another one looked at my china (it has pale pink carnations), then looked at my daughter and said, "Hint hint."

You can grow gorgeous pink ones, though--new cultivars come out every year!

Breathesgelatin--I hear ya. I remember a few events where we had to use red carnations instead of wine. Just as pretty, but they weren't wine!

Roses are pretty easy to grow and very forgiving if you forget to water them. If they weren't mine would've died out a long time ago!

Carnations are really easy to grow - we have them (pink, of course) in the front and side gardens at my parents house. I'm thinking about trying to grow some in my apt because it's like a greenhouse up here anyway.

I've been trying to get my mom to find a true "American Beauty" rose bush in the yard back at home... we have a red rose but it's a queen anne rose or something... not American Beauty... I think american beauty roses are kinda bigger and a bit more "wild"looking I don't really think they use them much as a cut long stem... but I'm not sure about that....

carnation herself: Pi Beta Phi

oldest daughter: Alpha Omicron Pi
the twins: Chi Omega

Of course there are others if you count cousins and such... doing that brings in Phi Mu I know and maybe a few more!
