Last Christmas, my dad and I went to the mall in Kalamazoo to do my last minute Christmas shopping! Well, my mom is a tub nut! By this I mean, the woman is CONSTANTLY taking a warm bath! I can't even tell you how many times I would call home and she would be taking a bath! Anyway, dad and I walk into the mall and we see this pretty large set-up of hot-tubs. Jokingly, I told my dad that if we got her a hot-tub, that would keep mom from taking a bath all the time! Well, he really thought this was a good idea! So, he asked some questions of this guy and started signing some papers. Well, after a while, I got bored! Dad sent me to go get some coffee and I was walking by some stand and this girl asked me if my dad was going to buy a hot-tub. I told her yes and thought it was pretty cool. She then asked me what "Omicron" meant on the sweatshirt I was wearing. On a few t-shirts and this particular sweatshirt, we just put Omicron and the event instead of writing out AOII. I explained that to her and she just flipped! She told me that she was an AOII too at a chapter in Tenessee I believe, but transfered to a school in Michigan that didn't have a chapter. Then, this girl showed me a ring she was wearing that was gold with a square that had AOII engraved on it. This knocked my socks off because I was wearing the same exact right, but silver! That was pretty cool! So, we exchanged information and she gave me a huge hug and said she was happy to have met me! My intention was just to do some last minute shopping...not meet a sister and talk about all these random, fun things! But, it was awesome anyway!

My random Phi Mu encounters

I once met a Phi Mu in the Philly International Airport. I was wearing a sweatshirt set of letters that gets passed down in my family, and I jsut happen to be wearing them on the airport that day. And I see this other set of letters in the crowd. So I go RUNNING up to her and almost tackled her. And she was like...Wow, uhm, way over-enthusiastic. LOL She was from Michigan, and it was just SO awesome to see my letters on someone I didn't know. Instant connection.

~~~
But by far the strangest meeting of Phi Mus I had was in New Orleans. My then-bf and I were driving cross-country from Arizona to GA and we stopped for a few days in New Orleans.
The first hotel we stayed in was awful, but anyway. Here's where it gets wierd. In the ballroom of the hotel there was this formal going on. no big deal, that happens in hotels all the time, right? Well I go into the bathroom cause I was coming down witha wicked UTI and I was in pain. And we'd been driving all day, so I look like a schlump, no make-up, hair not done...in pain...but I was wearing my bid day shirt by chance. So...I'm in the bathroom..in pain. I won't get graphic ;-) and I hear these two girls come in, rustling intheir formals gowns and they both go into the stall next to me to help each other lift their skirts. (You know, you've all been there in formal gowns ;-) ) And one of them says "Yeah, this is sisterly love." And my ears perked up. And then I know I heard "Phi Mu" in there too. So I knock on the wall and I say "Excuse me...are you Phi Mu sisters?" And they go "Yyeeesss..." And I was like "Oh my god! So am I!" So we come running out of the stalls and there they are in formal gowns and I look like a scruffball. They were from Alpha Lambda chapter at Louisiana Tech, and they were at the hotel for an ATO formal. But it was AWESOME to meet sisters in such a random setting.
I spent a semester abroad in London, and there were two Kappas from UF in the flat next door. I don't even remember how we realized that we were all Kappas, but we became pretty good friends, and even spent our Fall Break touring Europe together.
I work for a store in Bellingham, WA (the store is part of a large chain in the Northwest). There is a university (Western Washington) but NO Greek Life. For the closest Greek campus you either have to travel 2 hours south to Seattle (University of Washington, which has a HUGE Greek campus), or drive about an hour north across the border to Vancouver, BC to University of British Columbia (where I was initiated).
I happened to be wearing my Alpha Phi lanyard (which hold my timecard) and one girl in my line has her 2 ADORABLE small kids. She says, "Hey I am an Alpha Phi from Wazzoo (Washington State) and so is my sister."
It was pretty cool that we connected. We chatted a while and I looked at her daughter and said "Hey you got a legacy there!"
A few years ago, my biological sister was taken to the emergency room at a local hospital. I left school (wearing a Chi Omega shirt) and met my mother in the waiting room. While we were waiting, a group of older women walked by. One of the women looked at my shirt and turned back to me. She pointed to my letters and said, "Me too", smiled, and shook my hand. Turns out she was an alumnae from my chapter from the 50's! My mother was kind of impressed--I don't think she realized how big the whole "sorority thing" was until then.
Another fun story--one of my best friends went to her grandmother's house soon after she got her Chi Omega bid. It turns out her grandmother is a sister from our chapter, and her great aunt was our chapter president in the late 1930's! Her grandmother still meets with "her Chi O's" (as she calls them) from time to time, and my friend has some of her grandmother's sorority keepsakes now.
One of the coolest things ever: I was in Student Council in high school and the summer bt my junior and senior year I got sent to a stu co leadership conference where there were probably 40 other high schools represented. We got seperated into groups of about 35 and I met this really awesome girl who I became instant friends with. My freshman year I moved into my dorm room at Baylor and I was traveling the hall meeting new people when I saw her!! We rekindled our friendship and had a great time catching up. After a really rough first year with the death of her roomate, she moved to another school in the same state. ANYWAY, I was at the ADPi district convention in Tulsa and I saw her there!!! She had joined at the campus where she moved to!!! It was so awesome.
I was at the Macaroni Grill in Corpus when this OLD lady (probably 80 or 90 something) comes up to me and puts her hand on my shoulder and said, I was an ADPi at such and such school a few years ago. I was wearing our Black Diamond Formal shirt.
While I was flying to New York City my mom and I were in DFW airport and I saw this girl wearing a bid day shirt from Kansas. I introduced myself to her and we started talking. I discovered she was an alpha (pledge) which was good to know, so I didn't give her any info she shouldn't know yet!!!!
On my way home from Baylor to Corpus I passed girls all the time with ADPi letters. (I passed by Texas State, Southwestern, and UT) anyway, it was always cool to wave frantically out the window and do signs and junk. My boyfriend still makes fun of me when I do this. jerk.
Last night, a few of my sisters and I went to dinner at Olive Garden and were talking about our upcoming recruitment. We started talking about the cheers we were going to use, such as A-L-P-H-A Alpha Alpha all the way Alpha Delta Pi when a woman at the next table leaned over and said "I'm sorry to be nosy, but I'm an ADPi too!" It was really neat
I saw a sister at a body sculpting class and saw a girl wearing a SigKap recruitment shirt. I got really excited and ran up to her afterward, we talked for a while and she went to Findlay which is really close to my chapter, evne though we were in Cleveland. It was neat.
I told them UK, and they introduced themselves as DZs from Morehead (which is right up the road from my house). It was pretty cool--I've never met another DZ while I've been out someplace, except for the time I went to a party at another school that has no national sororities, and a girl comes up to me and says, "Hey, I saw your lavalier, and I had to come say hello 'cause I'm a DZ at OU!"
Hey I'm a DG at Morehead asn i know a lot of DZ's here...did you happen to catch their names?
I love these stories!
The other night I was walking into the college library from the parking lot, and I noticed a purple Camry with an SAI lisence plate frame. Now, our chapter is small, so I know what everyone drives...and I knew that no one in the chapter drove that car. I left a note under the windshield with my contact info. The girl e-mailed me that night. Turns out she's a graduate student who was initiated in the Zeta Chi chapter about 2 hours away. We've been talking and she will probably be affiliating with our chapter soon.
I was in Cleveland a few years ago for a family reunion. There were a ton of people (about 200) there that I had never seen before in my whole life but were somehow related to me. I was wearing my lavalier when a woman came up to me and said, "You're a Zeta?!" She was my 2nd cousin. I then found out that my great aunt and a couple of other extended cousins (like 4th and 5th) were all Zetas as well. I think my 2nd cousin was a ZTA at Baldwin-Wallace in Ohio. My great aunt was a ZTA at a school in Michigan...can't remember which one. My other cousins were ZTAs at schools in North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Another time, I was back in South Florida during Winter Break working at Bloomingdale's in Boca Raton. I would always wear my lavalier because there's a ton of people in South Florida who were in sororities. I was helping this customer; she was in her 30's and she was beautiful. She looked at my lavalier and said, "Oh my gosh! I was a ZTA at the University of Florida!"
I was helping this guy who was in his late 40's. He saw my lavalier and told me that he was a Sig Ep at UF and that his daughter was a ZTA there. He said, "Hold on! I'm going to go find my daughter and bring her over to you!" He introduced me to his daughter and we talked ZTA stuff for a while.
About a week later, I was ringing a girl up at my register when she asked where I was a ZTA at. I told her UCF. It turns out that she was a ZTA from my chapter. She had pledged in 1995 so she had already graduated by the time I went through.
I just met a frat brother from Wisconsin (Phi Beta Sigma) on our respective honeymoons in Jamaica. I just happened to have my Zeta t-shirt on.
In the last two weeks I've met a Phi Beta Sigma, an Alpha Phi Alpha, and a Alpha Kappa Alpha - all shopping seperately in my store. I also met a Delta Sigma Theta this summer who was carrying a hot Delta umbrella. I love that the NPHC greeks wear letters all the time because work gets so boring (fold sweaters, stack sweaters, repeat) sometimes that I'll get really excited to see Greek letters and will strike up a conversation with them!
There's also quite a few ABs from a local college that come shopping often, but they are not particularily friendly, and one rolled her eyes at me when I told her I was a Gamma Phi Beta. I'm also not a huge fan of this org. on a national level because it's the one that kicked out my friend's mom for being African-American, so I usually am none too excited to see their letters.
