I think the Canadian government needs to work on promoting the size of our country among other things in the upcoming PR campaigns. Canada is massive, it is the second largest country in the world.

Being afraid to travel to say Vancouver because of a SARS outbreak in TO is ludicrous. I am closer to Mexico than I am to Toronto - if something happens down there, should I pack my bags and leave!!??

Ah, my fellow Vancouverite, so true.

The debate reminds me of when I was in Melbourne, which is in the state of Victoria in Australia (no bush fires there).
There were raging bush fires in Sydney, in the state of New South Wales in Australia (a few HOURS away by plane).

I cannot tell you how many emails (when I was in Melbourne) I got from people, "Aren't you worried about the bush fires?"
Um, no...wrong city, wrong state.

Considering how easy it is to come by a map on the Internet, there really is no excuse to be geographically ignorant. I mean....really.

This is Canada....please note its huge size.
Thank you.

I was talking about her US statement not about Canada.

And Candians may not like it but some Americans may not want to go to Canada because of SARS even if its only in Toronto. I am not argueing that their justifactions are wrong. Canada is really a safe place even more so than the US probably, but news hype and disease fears will out rule logic most of the time.

Yes, Bowling for Columbine certainly proved that.
It's all about the fear mongering.

No matter what they tell you, size does matter.

Too bad in this case more people live and want to live in the US. Maybe because most of Canada is cold and fridged.

SO J/K my Canadian neighbors.

Yep, I'm always saying that there's a reason that about 90% of Canadians live within a couple of hundred miles of the US border ... they huddle there to keep warm.

Remind me to tell that to the girl at Capers in Vancouver who thought Atlanta was "close to New York" and the car salesman who asked me "Go to the casinos much?"

Not Atlantic City, people.. was everyone asleep in Geography class except me?

I traveled to Niagara Falls (the Canadian side) for Memorial Day and it was fine. Toronto might be a different story. My SO and his friends are supposed to go there for Caribana in August but are very worried about SARS. They have until the end of this month to cancel their hotel reservations they were told.

I live in Toronto.
I live WAY up town. I work WAY down town. I travel to and from work EVERY DAY on a crowded bus, followed by a crowded subway.
And I'm FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And no one is wearing masks on these buses or these subways. Are they less crowded day by day because all of these unprotected commuters are coming down with SARS? Well, I was sure as hell packed like a sardine on the bus today. Same as last week. Same as last month...Same as always!

Relax! Maybe if there was a war going on there wouldn't be so much media attention on SARS. There always has to be SOMETHING to fill the 6 o'clock news hour I suppose....

Strap me to a TTC, stuff my face with Tim Bits and a medium Double Double, Bring me to the CN Tower and make me catch a game at the Dome.
I LOVE T.O.

I go to school in Canada, and I got so many emails from people toward the end of the semester freaking out asking me if I was Ok, how many people at my school had SARS, etc. My school is about 8 hours from Toronto, and with the number of cases reported... it's like they thought the entire country was one big SARS case because of some cases in one city.

I wasn't worried when I was there, and I won't be worried when I go up to Canada (possibly Toronto... though hopefully Halifax - because I love it there, not because of SARS) in a few weeks.
