I think that it's awful b/c like you said the parents are the ones organizing these proms. Also did you see what the mom said...I attended the black prom and it didn't kill me...I mean was it supposed to?

I too find it strange that this suddenly popping up. I can't even begin to imagine the ideas that are placed into these children's heads. This just absolutely disgusts me that these kinds of things are still going on today in 2003. When I read that article I felt like I was stuck in some 1960's void.

Well, I'd have to say I'd go to the "open" prom, they'd at least have better music.

...and once again...isn't this 2003?? Not 1963??

This school came up on the radar screen last year because that junior class decided to have the first intergrated prom. Those kids are now seniors and pretty upset as you can imagine that this year's jr class went back to the "old way"

You'd be suprise that things similar to this still happen. I live in a very nice neighbor hood in Stone Mountain GA. About 10 - 15 years ago it was all white. As blacks started moving in the white homeowers started moving out en masse. Talk about white flight! I understand that some folks got huge bargins on the house because people were just trying to get out before their property values fell You see the same thing happening with churches as well.

Before their property value fell? I realize that quite unfortunetly its the sad truth, but still horrible. I quess I was raised too differently to be able to understand all of this.

Does it? I've never heard of separate but equal proms.

I have however heard of segregated neighborhoods and schools as a result. Is that what you mean?

Yes, well before property values fell. As a matter of fact, property values have NOT fallen, they've increased, but the perception was/is that with Black folks come crime, we don't cut our grass, etc. and will therefor impact property values. The Atlanta metro area is getting larger because most white folks just don't want to live with us (Black folks). (white) Folks who lived in Lithonia and Stone Mountain have moved to Conyers and Covington or northern Gwinett. I have friends who just moved to Swanee and we joke that it will be interesting to see how fast their neighborhood of $400k homes will be all black. Right now it's about 10%, but I guarentee if it gets much above that you will have serious white flight.

Sad, but true.....

Wasn't there a thread on here recently that talked aboutthe ethnic makeup of most of the GCers neighborhood?

Yes, so that makes it way less deplorable.

I was talking about this with one of my sisters tonight and she brought up a point that I hadn't thought of. What about the asian/hispanic/indian students that don't fit into the black/white category. Now my sister is asian, and she was adopted by a white family- so where would she fit into the mold?

What sickens me is the "black" class President and the "white" class President. The school is perpetuating this, no matter how much they try to claim innocence or not to be involved.

Most other minorities, are placed in the "honorary White" catagory. What really funny is that Africans are frequently placed in that catagory as well. I'm also willing to bet there are not many "others" in that town. Jsut goes to show, plain ol' Black American Negros, who helped build this country on their backs are the only ones really not worthy

I was kind of wondering the same thing, but I have never been there, so I don't know if there are many other minorities in that particular area. (I know there are in most places, but some places have more than others geographically)

I somehow haven't forgot over the years a class discussion on segregation in the 7th grade. The teacher was talking about how everyone had seperate water fountains, restrooms, etc. and I asked him where the other minorities would go (asians, hispanics, etc) and he told me they were considered white back then.

I think maybe this varied on geographic place?

In South Africa's former system of apartheid, there were finer distinctions between whites and blacks. If your skin coloring fell in between or your heritage wasn't lily-white European, you were labeled as 'coloured' and suffered the same racial prejudice meted out to blacks, though to a lesser extent.
