Your own fashion/beauty faux pas

I wore leg warmers. I actually had a whole drawer full of leg warmers -- I had red, purple, green & white striped, to name a few.

Yellow pants. When I was in jr. high, people used to wear Forenza stuff from the Limited. I had these yellow pants with snaps on the bottom and a yellow, white and orange shirt that said FORENZA across the front. Egads.

I also went through my "heavy metal" phase in junior high, where I wore really, really tight pants and a bandana tied around my ankle. I dumped peroxide on my hair, had bad perms, and wore those stupid british flag shirts like the guy from Def Leppard.

I was a total punk rock kid in high school and freshman year of college. I used to draw eyeliner strips on my eyelids and I had many gravity defying hairstyles. Then when I went to college and wanted to be more "normal" I curled my hair and OMG, it was AWFUL. What I did to my hair freshman year didn't even make sense. It was like a fried, curly mushroom on crack.

Oh, and I forgot -- I wore ties!

Oh dear lord....here's a preliminary list:
1. In elementary school I was entirely too skinny. As in I didn't clear 50 lbs until middle school. Yeah. To compensate I wore my parents sweatshirts and baggy sweatpants.
2. I also wore Duckhead shorts in every color of the rainbow (purple, hunter green, fuschia, navy, etc)
3. I had the big bang thing, which looked so bad on my tiny body. And for some unknown reason I insisted on tucking my hair behind my ears even tho they were freakin' huge!
4. In middle school there was a trend of wearing jogging suits w/ socks and birkenstocks. I did it.
5. Also in middle school I did the Clueless thing. Maryjanes, kneesox, plaid...damn that wasn't flattering.
6. High school...I dated a grunge guy and borrowed his clothes often. Not pretty.
7. I was a round size 10 in high school (I'm 5'2") and I wore baggy baggy stuff to hide it, until I slimmed down to a 0/2 late senior year. Then I bought cute stuff!
8. College...thus far nothing too bad. Occasionally I'll go to class in jammies. But that's perfectly acceptable here. I'm actually known as a fashion plate now. I guess I've come a long way. LOL

Just thinking back right now, I hang my head in shame, but not really. Lemme 'splain..

You can't be fashionable when you are obese, so I just had to wear what fit.

Saying that, I went to Catholic school for all 12 years of school before college, so I didn't have to worry so much about fashion trends until college, and that's when the isht hit the fan... Let's see....

1) I wore MC Hammer Pants....my mother and I wore matching MC Hammer pants....and ladies and gents, they were HOMEMADE! I MADE THEM IN HOME EC!!! AND THEY WERE MAROON PAISLEY!!! LMAO, b/c I thought I looked HOT!

2) My mom did my hair until 10h grade. I didn't know how! I wore banana clips...with a JERRY CURL!! I then moved on to the more "chic" Wave Nouveau, which I had UNTIL 5 years ago!!!!!!!! *I think I'm going to faint*

3) I wore the big, FAKE GOLD door knocker earrings. Who the hell did I think I was or want to be?? Salt -N- Pepa?? Lord, help me...

4) I wore these thick glasses with black frames and a straight mother of pearl band across the front....ICK!

5) I colored my hair strawberry blonde for two years in college

6) I used to want to be a witch (I know, don't ask) and I had this big, mother of pearl (hmm, I'm noticing a trend) and maroon triangle shaped medallion which suspended from a thick fake gold rope. I used to go around saying it was .....a talisman...OH MY HELL!

7) I once had 11 piercings total in my ears. 6 in one, 5 in the other. I thought I was the isht....I now only have three. 2 in one, 1 in the other...

I still need fashion help some days...My biggest faux pas is wearing shoes where the black is worn away from the heels, and I just keep forgetting to just color them in. The shoes are still wearable, and I'm a bit broke. I don't have easy to shop for feet, so shoes can be sort of expensive...

For the most part I escaped fashion faux pas as I am the youngest in my family and had older sisters to stylize me. My mother tried to make me a fashion victim when she was sporting parachute pants, the wooden Dr. Scholls sandals, and a frightening belted sweater with some random co-op t-shirt. It was San Francisco in the early 80's what do you expect? The only time I was victimized was when I received hand me downs...and some of them were years old so I had some scary stuff from the 70's. Everything was brown, burnt orange, avocado, and maize. Luckily my grandmother knew how to dress me and I wore penny loafers and Izod. My poor sister has this Holly Hobbie/Little House on the Prairie dress with some pinafore and a BOWL HAIRCUT. All her school pictures look as if she dressed from the wardrobes of The Brady Bunch and Mary Tyler Moore.

My only college faux pas was when I moved to Alaska. I came from wearing dresses, skirts, blouses, and at the *most* casual khakis with sweater sets and penny loafers. I always had on a real set of pearls and matching earrings. I went from San Francisco to Fairbanks, in January. My suitemate was from New England and was dressed similarly. We walked into the Cafeteria and everyone stopped and stared. We thought perhaps it was since we were new...it wasn't. Every place we went we were asked why were were dressed up. First chance we got we purchased jeans and some tshirts. I still REFUSE to wear flip flops or sandals in Alaska in ANY month that has an R in it. Don't get me started on white shoes and hand bags...ugh.

I've been a walking fashion disaster my whole life, and for the most part I still am. Some of the real gems from my adolescence:

In 6th grade, I didn't know how to french braid my hair, so I would fake it. I would pull the top part back into a ponytail, then pull a little more back and add it to the first pony tail, and so on down the back of my head. This wouldn't have been TOO bad if I hadn't insisted on wearing a hairbow at every junction of the ponytail.

In 7th grade I would go to the fabric store and pick out the brightest, funkiest, loudest fabrics, and have my mother make me outfits out of them. All outfits included a pair of shorts, a shirt that closely resmebles hospital scrubs, a jacket that resembled a lab coat, hair scrunchie, hair bow and hat. One of them was in painfully bright flourescent yellow with orange, green, pink, and blue paint splatters all over it. Others were tye-dye and floral. This was all topped off with bright flamingo pink lipstick, and fake keds with no socks.

In 8th grade, I decided to attempt goth. Black leggings, oversize black tshirt, black dress flats, a black lace bandana. I also wore, white foundation and black lipstick. Thankfully there are no photos of me from this phase to come back and haunt me.

In 9th grade, I started to dress more normally, in jeans and tshirts. However, I had gotten my hair cut to my jaw and spiral permed. It looked awful, so I insisted on wearing a bandana over my hair every day for 6 months while it grew out. I still wore my shoes without socks, and I stopped wearing makeup (still don't wear it to this day.)

By my senior year, most of my fashion faux pas revolved around carrying a stuffed koala bear backpack around everywhere, and really long necklaces with weird charms on the end, like a peace sign, an ankh, and a skeleton of a fish. I also had this one outfit I loved. My friend had one that matched and we would wear them together. It was a beige sweater, jean shorts, burgundy tights, and a pair of fake doc marten mary janes.

When I go to work I have to wear this ugly green shirt and non attractive jeans as my uniform for work. My hair looks horrible for work because it's growing out but I have to wear my hair in a pony tail and a hair net (). Going to work I always feel and look so unattractive and since I work on campus there are always cute guys that come in and I look so horrible.

Sometimes I don't get a chance to give myself a pedicure so my toes sometimes are not polished.

In the mid 90's I was torn between the thug and grunge look. Around Christmas time, I would wear these sagging and baggy GREEN jeans w/ a RED flannel shirt.

I think one of my biggest fashion faux pas was my haircut... when I was little my mom wouldn't let me cut my hair... so in 5th grade when I finally convinced her to let me cut I got it cut really short... like so short I was mistaken for a boy all the time... and I pretty much kept it like that till I was a freshman/sophomore in high school... now I'm all about the long hair... and never get it cut shorter than my chin...

oh yeah and I wore stirrups with a turtleneck and a huge v-neck sweater over it and I thought I looked good... I wore that for like three school pictures in a row... but of course that was probably my mom's influence...
