Frankly, by the irrationally irate tone of your post, you're not in the position to be telling anyone to "chill out." The other poster stated she was offended, stated her position, and you chose to attack her views.

You stated above that "his comments are somewhat similiar to the fun we poke at Japanese tourists here daily." So that makes you as much of a dumbass as Shaq?

Congratulations.

XOXO,
Annie.
Call me an idiot...call me an dumbass, I really don't give a rat's ass. Let me just show you an example of why I don't get pissed off when people poke fun at minorities.

Growing up in Hawaii, there's a guy [Frank DeLima] that makes a living buy telling jokes that are looked upon as racist [by non locals]--for example

"What's the name of Asian blindfolds again?...oh yeah, Dental Floss."

Those kinds of jokes would probably spark some racist outcry from most, but to be honest, it's accepted here.

Sometimes I think that some Asians are just too uptight and they have sticks up their asses, but I'm also an Asian who's never really lived life as a minority. I'd probably feel different if I were born a Filipino-Japanese in Kansas.

I get teased all the time by my family. They call me twinkie because of the time I've spent on the mainland...you know, white on the inside...yellow on the outside?

In Hawaii, we're more likely to accept living with other races (we have to), but I wouldn't be surprised if we're a little freer with our jokes and insults than others would be.

Am I racist because I can laugh at everyone's differences, including my own?

Maybe not racist, but according to Shark in Skirt, I'm a dumbass and an idiot.

whoa....which poster was that? i'm a guy. and she didn't attack my views (that would constitute and intellectual argument) she attacked my character (which constitues a small mind). if you can't argue with someone without trying to insult them, then you have no argument to begin with.

OTW, I don't think that you are a dumbass or an idiot. Now Shaq, on the other hand, really is both a dumbass and an idiot!

this isn't being blown out of proportion. this is how some asian people feel about a subject that affects them directly.

And if you would read all of my quotes, you might find that I sometimes change my mind (see comments about athletes as role models) when responded to with even a small degree of civility. That's how disagreements are resolved and debates work.

You are welcome to be offended by Shaq. I'm entitled to my opinion in this particular case as well. What was out of line, in my opinion, was the tone and "aggressive language" (your words).

i did read all of your quotes as well as all of your posts, and you seem to let ignorance off the hook becuase he's an athlete. athletes aren't supposed to be role models....but they are. you want a 4 year old kid making fun of the chinese language becuase he heard it on the news? especially if no one is making a big to do about it? no....ignorance should be enlightened, regardless of it being the president, an athlete, or a hobo down the street. if you ignore stupidity, what makes you smarter than the idiot?

So I didn't mean to start a thread with the intention of having people attacking eachother. Everyone is completely entitled to his/her opinion and we need to respect that those are their views. People's opinions about this issue stem from their different upbringings or experiences growing up, the culture that they are surrounded by, outside influences, etc.

We all don't have to agree with eachother, but let's just remember that we don't have to disrespect others either.

Some people have grown a tough skin, while others are sensitive. I fall into the category of being on the more sensitive side, esp. when it comes to racist/prejudiced/ignorant comments. But that's just me...

I never said I was.

I don't know Shaq, so I don't know if he's an idiot. He's an professional athlete, and I've met so many of them that I don't take them very seriously.

Not to get into this personal debate but this seems to be more of a personal attack than that of an argumentative post. You go on to say you "never made any personal comments about her," yet you call her a child that got on a computer and you comment on her "lack of intelligence, maturity as well as agrument."

I love the sarcasm

that particular post was a personal attack. she decided to take it there, none of my previous posts were personal. i was trying to stick to the topic. but in her lack of argument, her only reply was that i (notice that nothing was said about my argument) didn't know what an intellectual debate was. nice comeback.
