the real "fake" greeks
I see both sides of this argument. The first one being that yes, it is true that all of organizations did start as a small group of women or men who were friends and who wanted to form a group. The other side however, is manily these people formed our sorority/fraternity because they believed in certain ideals and it was just not to make tshirts or feel better at a party if someone asked you if you were greek.
I know that at my campus, greeks have a bad name despite all the good stuff we have done to try to remedy what one frat did that made everyone look poorly on the greek system. Our greek week every year raises close to 10 grand for charity during greek week. The problem with these fake greeks is that they are wearing letters which in turn whether they like it or not is making them represent the greek system at texas a&m because most non greeks do not know really which letters mean what they just see greek letters and think automatically that those people are greek, even if they are not. This really frusterates me because of how much work i know my individual house is putting in to try to make the greek system look better by having us represent positivly when wearing our letters, and i know that when the fake greeks on our campus go out and do stupid things in the name of their letters it is undoing all the hours of hard work that we have spent trying to get articles about positive greeks events in our school newspaper who loves to find out bad things about the greeks on our campus.
That is my little rant. So to sum it up. If these fake greeks are representing positve values and are making a contribution to the community, i say keep up the good work, wear your letters wiht pride and maybe think about going from fake greek to greek. However, if you are fake greek and represent negitavly then i would recomend you be carefull because you are gonna end up getting a lot of people angry.
