If you are rushing and not yet a member of a sorority it would probably be in your best interests to choose a new screen name.

Hi DeltaBetaBaby:
I've helped GC'ers with recs. I agree with you- a rec is very serious and important. I won't write one up unless the girl mails me her resume. Then I write a letter of introduction to the advisor of that school letting them know I do not know this girl personally but I am basing my recommendation on her outstanding resume and the enthusiasm she has shown for recruitment. I leave out that we met on a internet chat room for Greeks- I love GC to death but who knows what an 80 year old advisor from Mississippi will think of that! Sue

Before you send you anything, make sure thats what they do their first. my soroity made it a point to find those girls first and make up their minds based on the resume and her looks before getting to know her. at my school now, panhellenic has outlawed resumes and pictures pre-rush.

Thank you, WineandBlue and Sux_XO, for clarifying that!
I guess recs are different at Southern schools where everyone has them. In the midwest, we do not expect rushees to find their own. Therefore, if an alum goes to the trouble to write a rec, we take it very seriously.
I hope you realize that I did not mean to offend or imply that you are doing anything wrong. I am just trying to get a better grasp of what goes on in other chapters.
I guess it is futile to try to understand the South.
<sigh> :-)

My friend's daughter will be rushing next fall at U of Alabama.
I am confused as to which sororities have chapters. I DID do a search,(one post only listed 10???) but if anyone has some links, could they please post?
I promised I would try to help her.

Well this whole thing just confirms what I said in an earlier post....the South is a different animal!!!!!! I have never heard of sending a RESUME for rush!!!! I have heard of recs (which we never used at Kent) but resumes??????
I have a question.....does a rec have to come from an alum of the chapter to which it is being submitted? Like could I send a rec for a girl rushing at LSU for instance?

It never hurts to include a resume because sometimes the recommendation form doesn't cover everything. I like to get one because it helps me to write the comment portion of the MIF.
Regarding MIFs for chapters other than your own, you are a sister and your recommendation is always welcome. I know from experience that your Phi Gamma chapter is a legacy powerhouse. If your girl isn't a Chi O legacy (Phi Gam in particular) or doesn't know anyone in the chapter, her chances of getting in are slim but not impossible.

On the old rush threads, this question was asked and the answer would seem to be- Anyone can write a rec. For a few of the sororities, they will have their alums write it IF you're rushee "blows them away". This would NOT be one of the stronger houses as anyone expecting a bid from the top half should be well aware of protocol at LSU. However, I'd have to say that the person writing the rec has some impact on the invite to the second round. Beyond that, I think it would depend on the pressure the alums can exert on a chapter. A girl from our area pledged what some have refered to as the top house at Bama.
HOW (grades-personality-involvement-natural assets all in the minus column-but a good dresser!) is beyond me. I do know WHO wrote her rec AND flew to her initiation. So, I can only wonder.

To answer your question, JAM, the rec can come from any alum. For example, I was initiated into the Alpha Epsilon chapter of Phi Mu (FSU) but if I wanted to write a rec for the Alpha Mu chapter of Phi Mu(Auburn) it would be welcome. No, maybe I wouldn't pull as much clout as a prominent Alpha Mu alum, but it is still a rec for the girl and it would work in her favor. Basically, you're welcome to write an AXO rec for girls rushing at UA, LSU, etc. if you choose to do so. Hope that is clear

Before I answer, I want to clarify some terms for reference.
Sorority Alum - Alumna of a sorority
Chapter Alum - Alumna of that specific sorority chapter
Anyone can write a letter of recommendation. I have seen letters from guidance counselors, priests, etc… It really can't hurt. However, the acceptance of those recommendations truly depends on the chapter and the inter/national organization's procedures. A sorority alum can write a recommendation for any chapter of her sorority. Although like ladybug1116 said, a chapter alum may hold more clout.
The bottom line is if a PNM really shines, an alumna will be found for a recommendation. I have seen several girls pledged to a few chapters who didn't have that particular recommendation going into recruitment. However, based on her personality, grades, and letter from a guidance counselor, an alumna was found to write an official ABC recommendation.
