Embarrsing another GDI wearing Greek Shirts

On this subject, when I was vacationing in Atlanta last week, I met a homeless man wearing an Alpha Delta Pi formal shirt from 1989. My mom was standing on the sidewalk looking at a map, and he came up to us and asked if we needed any help finding anything. He was very nice and helpful! Although no one would assume he was an ADPi , he's still out there representing the azure and white in a good light!

I've never walked into a goodwill/ERC store and noticed the racks were empty. They could probably do without GLO shirts just fine. Not exactly a staple of their existance.

If we want them to wear our shirts we could make them special for the homeless. Like "Sigma Nu gave me this shirt". Give them in exchange for advertising our philanthropies or other events.

I saw a male construction worker pouring concret wearing AGD letters before. Ugly early '90s pattern too! I've never seen it but there are homeless people on our campus and once in a while people say they see them wearing our shirts and hats. I know one brother who swapped shirts with a homeless man who was wearing a pike shirt. Another time one of our guys offered to buy a hat that the homeless person was wearing.

I have seen greek lettered shirts/jackets at the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores many times before. I'm sure the people that purchase them probably think its just a designer's label (i.e. FUBU) or something like that. I doubt seriously if its purchased with the intention to "perp" the organization. They just want some cheap clothes.


Now REAL perps are a whole 'nother story. However, i think by using common sense, you can distinguish between a "perp" and someone who poor and just need some cheap clothes.

This is a little out of hand, give the guy a break. When I was in high school, my brother gave me one of his school's greek week shirts for my birthday because it had South Park on it.

You can attend a sorority's philanthropy and wear one of their shirts from it even though you aren't in that sorority or another fraternity that helped out.

Some people are just outragous. We have a girl that goes around campus wearing our letters and sporting them all over her car. She tells everybody that she is one of us, which is utterly embarassing seeing as she is well known as a total fruit loop. She has been asked to stop so many times. She just won't get the message.

Well, if she really is well-known as a total fruit loop, then maybe most people know she isn't really a Phi Mu.

I'll grant that it is one thing if someone is trying be, as someone called it, a "perp." But I am not going to get at all bent out of shape over a homeless or financially-strapped person who shops at Goodwill wearing my letters. Among the values that my fraternity (not to mention, my religion) teaches is concern for others (not just my brothers) and their wellbeing, even if that concern is at my own expense. I assume most GLOs espouse a similar value. When I see someone down on their luck wearing letters (or more likely, a tee-shirt from a Greek event), I'm just glad they have clothes to wear. I save embarresment for other things.

But think about one thing: people that are poor and shop at Goodwill or places like that usually never went to college. They have no idea that non-members wearing letters is a bad thing; they just need cheap clothes and at Goodwill, t-shirts are the cheapest things. Many of them may not even be familiar with Greek letters and realize that they stand for a fraternity.

Even if they DO know that they are GLO shirts, they probably truly don't know it's wrong to wear them. I mean, like at Goodwill I've also seen shirts for high school clubs like FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, etc, and for things like school shirts, sports shirts, band shirts, etc. There's nothing wrong with someone that's not a member wearing *those* shirts....so, why would a poor/homeless person think it's wrong to be wearing Greek letters?

I agree! It is doubtful that the people who work at the Goodwill or Salvation Army (often volunteers) even know the significance of the Greek Letters. They are just doing their jobs and putting the clothes on the racks. It would be silly to think otherwise.

No one seems to have brought this up, but if the member who donated the shirt really cared about having someone else wearing the letters who was not a member, they would not have donated the shirt. Maybe they had too many shirts or whatever and thought donating them to those in need was what they wanted to do.

I keep all my shirts, but if I did pass them down, the person I'd give them to would probably not be a GLO member, as many of my younger family members are not Greek. They are not AOPi's.

I think perps suck, yes, and its being done intentionally. I just don't see any reason to get bent out of shape about someone who doesn't even know what it is they are wearing.

I don't like the idea of someone intentionally trying to misrepresent themselves as a member of a GLO (i.e. a "perp"), but if a homeless person or other person in need was wearing a Delta Gamma shirt, I would not give it a second thought. Besides, if a PNM saw a homeless person wearing my GLO's shirt and that ultimately made their decision to not like us, then (as my Aussie friend Sharlene says) "Good riddance to bad rubbish!"

I think it would suffice to say: if you don't want someone less fortunate picking your clothes up for cheap, don't give them to an organization such as Goodwill. Simple.

Just exactly what is a perp? Someone trying to get laid who could give a rats ass about some lame ass orginazation that will actually debate whether they should kick someone's ass for wearing a symbol ? I know if I decide to become a fraternity member I would do it for the stupid ass chicks that thought it actually meant something and nothing else (yeah I'm kinda inconsiderate I promise not to degrade the chicks that don't want to be degraded, okay??????). Both my brothers were in what were considered the best fraternities on campus. They never bought any shit like some of you stupid fucks are talking. They were in there because they thought it might help in getting laid. I think any chick that hooks up with someone just because they got some studpid ass symbol on their shirt deserves anything she gets. I'm not saying I don't appreciate easy girls!!!!!! Anyway, God Bless America!!!!!!!!!!

Even though you only have 2 posts on GC I think you should know that the majority of us here do NOT think this way nor do we fit the stereotypical image of fraternity and sorority members. That being said you might want to take your views on greek life and such elsewhere b/c I know that what you said up there offended me as I'm sure it did others as well.
