Problems.
one thing that I find hard to...stomach, happens all to often here at my college. without mentioning names of the houses...
In the last 3 years, two of the 5 greek houses here have been shut down. one for hazing, one for. Well. a number of reasons(drugs/"illeagl" parties/bad relationship with nationals). the House that was put down for hazing had a number of rich alumni convince both the school and their HQ to not expel the members, and so after a one year suspension, the 4 remaining members ran a rush. And What's going on now? hazing. Still. They bring in alumni to help outnumber the pledges. They still haze in open areas(though these are the minor things, that do the social humileation that helps give all GLO's a bad name to the non-greek's). the house that recolonized after a year of being shut down with its members expelled, has come back into the fold nicely. They too are hazing still. There is a mentality that I find explained to me very simply as "it happened to me, I should be able to do it to them." The chapters that get shut down for hazing have to stay down at least until the old members graduate, to at least try and quelch this...mentality.
I also find it rather. surprising and annoying with the blind eye the school turns to soem of the activies going on. One fraternity makes their pledges wear the same clothing for an entire week(hellth week). Each day, they make a decision. Shower, Eat dinner, or change your underwear. SEeing these guys wear the hats/shorts/shirts made for them, with the many times, degrading nicknames. (crotchrocket sticks outin my mind. And another with an obvious set of vulger words in it still makes me laugh, in a sorry, sick sort of way.) They walk around the entire week with these clothes, go to class, go to the caff, walk past admin, whom if they don't see them, on many occasions MUST smell them. And yet, they are never called on it. maybe I'm oversensitive, but...because of the history of my fraternity, I have little tolerance for Hazing...
