I think she's well qualified and will bring a different perspective to the Court. I'm disappointed because I fear most of the discussion about her will be of the "transgender/lesbian/ugly" variety. (not to say of course that the three are inherently connected, just that all three will be used as a way to slam her.) If she were the first transgender or lesbian Justice that'd be awesome, but she's not.

She was interviewed at the time. Perhaps Obama made a mental priority list? He could have expected/hoped for 2 appointments in this term. And he could conceivably have a third.

Perhaps, and she was considered a strong candidate before he ever made office. and who is the third you think?

It may have been as simple as giving her more time as SG. And I worry that Ginsberg may have to resign sooner than she would like for health/age reasons. For her sake I hope not, but you never know.

I said it wasn't about gender because I think EW would've made a similar remark about a man who doesn't appear to fit the heterosexual mold. Perhaps a better way of putting it would've been that EW wasn't making a sexist remark. She's as qualified as anyone and she's replacing Brennan. The Court needs a strong liberal voice. I figure since guys like Roberts and Alito got a pass, she should too. I am a little disappointed in the fact that she is yet another justice selected from the ivory tower sorts of institutions. I wonder whether we'll ever see an attorney who has been in solo practice, who didn't graduate from an Ivy League school appointed to the SCOTUS. Looking back at the maelstrom that followed Miers' nomination, I doubt it.

Solo practice, not likely. Not the right "track," I'm afraid. As for Ivy League, Stevens went to Northwestern Law School, and O'Conner went to Stanford. Not exactly Podunk College of Law, but not Ivy League either.

Just fine. There was some damage 5-10 miles away from us, but we were unscathed. Didn't even see the softball-sized (wtf) hail. Luckily, most of the storm hit in the middle of nowhere out near southeastern Oklahoma, which is basically a godforsaken place where the chief exports are meth and marijuana. Any damage down there probably qualifies as blight removal. Any crop damage down there is probably uninsurable.
