In case anyone is interested, this poem came from a sermon preached at St. Paul's Cathedral in London following the death of King Edward VII. The full sermon, entitled "The King of Terrors," can be found here.

Thank you, everyone
I just saw this thread now, and can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your kind thoughts and prayers. My mother was an amazing lady, with the steel in her spine to correct social injustice, but always with that loving touch. She was also my best friend, and I feel honored to have spent the past almost six years making her life easier after her other heart attacks. She would have been somewhat embarrassed by how many people have sent their sympathies to us.
Since we're talking quotes, her favorite was from Albert Schweitzer. It's often attributed to Mohammed Ali, but she had/I have a booklet with the quote from 1955 (when he was still Cassius Clay): "Service to others is the rent you pay for the space you occupy on Earth."
I can only hope to be half the woman, half the lady, that she was. Thanks again.

PS: I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you that, in talking with some of her friends, we all agreed that the past week was "one Steel Magnolia moment after another"! Thank you for starting this thread, wrigley!

Apologies for my belated condolences, as I haven't visited GC in over a week.
So sorry to learn of your mother's passing. I'm remembering how you mentioned that she decorated your room in blue and blue with keys when you were a little girl. She must have been a grand lady, for that and many other reasons.

I have enjoyed hearing the stories of your wonderful mother, Dixie, over the years. I know she will be missed. My sweet mama passed away 3 years ago and I still miss her every single day. The memories are strong and we are blessed to have had strong female role models.

I haven't checked GC in a while so I'm just now seeing this. Honeychile, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I can't imagine what you're going through right now but I pray that the Lord comforts you during this time. Given the kind of daughter that she raised, I'm sure she was a very charming, loving, and gracious lady.

Prayerful...
Though we've never spoken, I will keep you and your family in my prayers...
