I hope it works out for you. We had the paperwork get lost on bid day for one of ours. Eventually it was straightened out.

Is it just me, or does this sound a little sketchy? I was not aware that chapters could call girls who had dropped their house. I know local panhellenic rules vary, but this doesn't sit well with me.

The girls called me because they saw my name on the list of girls who dropped rush entirely. Since I was no longer a PNM, it was OK. This entire situation is kinda sketchy though...I don't understand how they weren't more careful. Oh well. Today is bid day, and I'm a little bummed that I'm not out there celebrating like I could be. I should find out tomorrow who is doing COB. I'm slightly dissallusioned with the whole system right now, so I'm still not sure if I'll do it, but I'm keeping my options open!

You've got the right idea, Becca!
Sometimes a house doesn't know if they have spaces in chapter total until after rush...advisors add to quota, house total is expanded, you just never know! So if you're still interested, make sure the ADPis and Alpha Phis know you're available--let 'em all know!--and see what happens.

Theta and Pi Phi, two of my favs both made quota, and have full houses. ADpi made quota too (I'm soooo proud of them!) but they had so many seniors drop that they still have room in their house so they might be doing COB. Alpha Phi did well, but I'm not sure if they made quota or not. By the way, quota this year was 27. I'll call my friends in A phi tonight and see if they're doing COBs...are COB's based on quota or the house being full? I haven't been able to get a straight answer. I'll keep you all posted...

Here's the scoop...
Hi Sunny,
You've been such a sweetie. I hope you have the opportunity to accept a bid through informal recruitment (COB).
Here's how it works. A chapter is eligible to extend bids through COB IF:
a.) The chapter did not make quota during formal recruitment.
b.) The chapter made quota, but is not at Campus Total (sometimes known as simply "Total").
For example...
* Quota at ABC University is 50.
* Campus total is 150.
* XYZ sorority got quota, but has 147 women in their sorority.
* They could take in 3 new women in order to achieve Campus Total of 150.
c.) I am not a Panhellenic Rules expert, so there may be other instances in which a sorority may COB.
If I am mistaken in this answer, I am sure someone will help clarify...
I hope this helps. I truly hope you'll find a sorority home--you sound like a person who would be an asset to Greek life.
Jen

Terms to Know...
Continuous Open Bidding (COB) (sometimes known as Continuous Open Recruitment, or COR): a time other than formal rush during which bids may be extended and accepted for eligible chapters. Some Panhellenic-affiliated chapters continue to recruit and pledge women throughout the school year.
Snap Bidding: the time during which sororities that did not reach quota may extend bids to women who participated in the formal recruitment process. "Snap bids" may be extended to women who were not matched at another chapter. <-- May not apply to you since you withdrew from formal recruitment.
Quota: the maximum number of women a Panhellenic sorority may recruit during formal rush. This number is determined by the university's Panhellenic.
Total: the maximum number of women a sorority may have as members. This number is determined by the university's Panhellenic. (Also called "Campus Total;" also "Ceiling")

I don't know the details of Sunny's situation, but it would seem that if the paperwork glitch was the fault of Panhellenic, then Sunny's dropping rush was a decision based on their oversight. If so, there may be a case made for her still being elgible for a Snap bid. Since we don't do either COB or Snap bidding at my chapter, I'm no expert on the subject.

I am sooo sorry to hear you were dropped!
Quota is only important during formal rush. Once rush is over, any sorority that's not at total can extend COB's. So you have a chance with ADPi and Alpha Phi.
A chapter that didn't make quota but is over total, cannot extend COB's, though they can snap bid until they hit quota.
Computer problems do happen. I know of one case on my campus, where there were 2 girls with the same name, and a sorority that loved girl #1 accidentally dropped her because they confused her with girl #2. In this case, rush was still going on, so they just invited girl #1 to the next party.
I think your best bet is to let Alpha Phi and ADPi know you're interested in informal rush, and see what happens.
Good luck!

quota
Hi ladies. Only APhi, Theta, Pi Phi, ADPi and DG made quota at UCSB this year. Kappa took 14, AChiO 18, AEPhi 3, Sigma Kappa 4, Gamma Phi 23, Tri Delt 24 (with Quota at 27). I don't know who all is over total, but I know that Alpha Phi is. Becca, thank you so much for your honesty, and best of luck in COB, etc.

APhi is definitely over total, and I'm pretty sure that Theta and Pi Phi are too. I think DG's pretty close. Kappa did snap bids on sunday and got 5 more girls (I think) so they had 19 on bid day. ADPi has room in their house, and is doing COB's sometime soon. I've been approached by multiple girls in the house, so I think that's a good sign, and my roommate definitely keeping me posted as to when exactly they are! I was invited to Kappa's COB's which were tuesday night, but declined because I would rather do ADPi...I know it's totally a gamble, but I'm praying it all turns out for the best. Our school had a pretty big problem with rush this year...the scantron machine which read the cards went down, one day ran 3 hours late, there were tons of rush violations. According to a friend on panhellenic, on house racked up $12,000 in fines, which I think is ridiculous, especially since they didn't even get that many girls. Rush was definitely stressful, tedious, overwhelming and in the end disappointing, but it was an experience which I'm ultimately very glad I was a part of. Hopefully I'll be able to do COB at ADpi, and if not, then I still have a million other things going on in my life; it wuold just be a very nice addition! Thanks so much to everyone for their advice and well-wishes! I'll keep ya posted!
