There Oughta Be a Law
From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

As police released more details about the shooting of a Qwest Communications worker in north Minneapolis, they also spoke about its repercussions within the community.

An unwritten rule against harming people whose work brings them into different parts of the city was broken when the telephone repairman was shot as he did his job, Assistant Minneapolis Chief Tim Dolan said Thursday.

"If that line starts to be crossed, the quality of life here is going to be seriously affected," he said.

Shooting a telephone repairman in Minnesota breaks "an unwritten rule"? In some states it would actually be against the law.

A very interesting tour group.

Quote:
WEALTHY Americans are paying more than £3,000 to go on controversial package tours to India that mix shopping and sightseeing with handing out food and medicines to the poor.
The tours take groups of up to 15 people on horseback through the western desert state of Rajasthan, stopping off at villages along the way.

Poor villagers are said to be bemused at the sight of the American cavalcade galloping towards them across the dunes. But curiosity turns to pleasure when free livestock, food and medicines are handed out.

Caroline Duncan, 31, an actress from Los Angeles, who was on the first tour organised by Souri’s company, Relief Riders International, last October, was also delighted.

“To hold a sick child in your arms, give her the medicine she needs and then ride into the desert on a beautiful horse under a starry sky to have a fabulous dinner in a fairytale fort is an extraordinary experience,” she said.

I suppose..... if they ARE helping people in these places, like with food and medicine.... and feeding more money into the country... Then i suppose that's a good thing.

But these rich people look like they are trying to make themselves feel like heroes and saviors in some far-off country. Sounds like an ego trip for them.

But like I said.... I guess if they are helping people.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about it. On one had, it's good that the tour group is helping out the people and that a reputable organization is affiliated with the tour. On the other hand, it's tacky to have a tour of poverty so one can have an ego booster.

At the end of the day, they're helping people out.

Your take on Twin Cities race relations is very interesting. I was wondering when Minneapolis annexed Georgia. Could you tell me, without pulling up an article?

I think your quote was taken out of context. Was it the entire article from the Star Tribune?

Am I the only one who didn't see anything about race in the article that was posted? I'm confused.

Zagreb zoo opens cages for humans to warn about human devastation of nature

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) - Ever wondered how a lion feels, trapped in a zoo cage? Visitors to Zagreb's zoo can find out, with two cages there set aside for humans as of Friday.

The cages - which visitors will be able to enter and leave at will - are labeled "Homo Sapiens" and are even partially furnished.

But the project, launched by the head of the zoo, Mladen Anic, goes beyond offering a behind-the-bars experience to warn about human devastation of nature.

"We wanted people to get a perception of how the animal perceive the cage," Anic told The Associated Press. "But we also wanted to inform people about all the ecological problems for which humans are directly responsible."

One cage is for "good man," and is furnished with things made of natural materials - bamboo chairs, and water and fruit displayed on a wooden table. The other, for "evil man," has materials that harm nature - plastic chairs, and garbage in the corner, with a note above the mirror reading: "The most dangerous beast on the planet."

The "good" cage contains brochures on how to protect the environment; the "bad" one shows how it is being ruined.

"I hope this will make people think about the fate of ourselves and our planet," Anic said.

Already on Friday, dozens of people toured the cages. A group of youngsters amused themselves by throwing food to friends in the cages.

Nude Swimmers Abandon Loch Ness Swim

By Associated Press

September 19, 2005, 8:21 AM CDT

INVERNESS, Scotland -- One lap of Loch Ness was barely tolerable, but two more proved too much Saturday for a group of nude swimmers who surrendered to bad weather.

The four men and two women, taking turns of an hour each, began their charity stunt Friday night and completed their first 23-mile lap Saturday morning. And that was all, as temperatures sank and winds rose.

"We swam all through the night and successfully completed one length in 14 hours and four minutes but the conditions were so bad we couldn't go on," said Kevin Mitchell, 56, the first swimmer to set off Friday.

"The waves were so big and the wind was so strong that we couldn't keep the (escort) boat with the swimmer and that made it unsafe to continue."

British Naturism had organized the sponsored relay to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Man hangs underwear on parks vehicles

The Associated Press
Published on: 09/20/05

WAUSAU, Wis. — A Wisconsin man upset with the Wausau parks department has found an unusual way to retaliate.

Police say the man repeatedly hung women's underwear on department vehicles while they were parked for the night.

They say he struck 30 to 50 times, hanging bras and panties of various sizes on cars.

Police say he admitted doing it after being caught on videotape. He told investigators he was upset with the parks department because an employee cutting grass at a park would blow grass onto him while he sat in a gazebo.

Police have referred the case to the district attorney's office, recommending that he be charged with disorderly conduct.
