And THIS is what is wrong with this system!

I am so sorry. To fully maximize your options and walk away with nothing is the reason this system is unfair and just wrong. Someone needs to do the right thing. It is time.

In response to the numerous IU alumnae who claim that 100+ person pledge classes are too big: are you ever going to be close friends with more than 10 or so women from your pledge class anyway? I had about 70 in mine and now at my alma mater I think pledge classes are in the 80s somewhere, though it does fluctuate.
You people want 45 person pledge classes in order to be elite at the expense of hundreds of girls who will have to forlornly roam IU's campus seeing you in your letters, like I did until I wised up and transferred. I know you'll all claim that there's more to IU than being greek, but guess what, you ARE greek and have no idea what it's like to desperately be on the outside looking in. Joining clubs and other organizations is a valid pursuit of time while in college, but you're kidding if you think it's a replacement for greek life.

I agree. And every one of us who has a chapter at IU should be embarrassed that it is allowed to continue. Are we individually responsible? No. But we're part of the organizations that continue this year after year.
I'm truly disappointed in my own organization for (apparently) not being willing to take a lead in changing this. It really is in direct opposition to what we believe in and stand for as Tri Deltas.

Absolutely! This should not happen. Just sad right now for this young woman.

Supposedly, most people can only handle 4-6 close relationships, so having more than a handful of friends is very unlikely. I'm glad you brought this up. I was close to some of my pledge class, some of the year ahead of me, and some of the year behind me. That's pretty much it.

I am going to talk with her about that option, I think it would be amazing to be the start of a new sorority at IU, she could watch it grow throughout life and know she was part of the beginning.
I know there is a lot of talk that IU is doing nothing to avoid this, but they have added these new chapters and even though they don't have a house, I am sure that someday they will so in my opinion they are at least trying, I think it would be impossible to build several new houses from scratch but it is the beginning of something at least.
Thanks to all for your sweet words, it is hard but we all need to have our girls keep their heads up! maybe all the girls that didnt make the cut can come together in Delta Phi Epsilon!

I feel just terrible for the young ladies who maximized their options, played by the rules, and still did not receive a bid.
I thought rush at Texas was tough, and that was when covered wagons were still rolling west.

Is it possible that each rho gamma handles things differently? My daughter's rho gamma said she would visit each girl privately in her room. A text message is so impersonal.
|
I thought so too, I asked my daughter and her Rho Gamma asked how they would want to know and my daughter requested the text. I guess she wanted to process alone.

Hopeful Mom, I so wished for a different outcome for your daughter. To go back 10,000 posts or so, IU recruitment is so screwed up that she should not take it personally. It's a Vegas crapshoot. It's easier for me to say than perhaps her to believe, but for IU it rings true.
If she is up for it, she may wish to look into the new DPhiE colony as an earlier poster suggested. Yes, colonies can be selective but rarely arbitrary, and alumnae from different schools and the HQ leadership are typically involved.
Kind wishes to you and your daughter.

Very sorry to hear this. I hope she gives some serious thought to the new colonization.

Hopeful Mom,
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. Sending hugs to both of you. It is because if IU's rush process that my daughter choose another school. IU is losing some great young women!

Hopeful Mom, my heart breaks for your daughter. I hate that she maximized her options, was open minded and ends up with a text message and not bid.
I too am embarrassed to have my organization on this campus and not trying to change things..
Your daughter sounds like an outstanding young woman with a lot to offer. I hope she will find a group, club or perhaps colony with D Phi E that will appreciate her..
