I totally forgot about the pageant, but luckily I was able to tune in just in time for the Evening Gown to see Miss USA fall on her ass.
LOVED IT!

Well, I'm glad that it was in the evening gown competition because there's a story on AOL that says she fell in the night gown competition. I was grossed out, thinking they'd sunk to new lows.
ETA AOL blurb:
A Curse?
'Miss Actress'
They competed for the crown, today we know them as actresses.
Halle Berry and more...
The déjà-vu of the pageant occurred when Miss USA fell during the night gown competition, just as it happened to last years contestant, Rachel Smith, during the 2007 Miss Universe pageant held in Mexico City. Crystle Stewart quickly stood up, applauded along with the audience and with a smile, continued to model as it nothing had happened. Some of the candidates had some interesting dress choices, such as Dominican Republic, wearing a tight gown adorned with crystals, Miss Mexico, with a white skirt and a see-through top that looked like a bra and Miss Colombia, with an interesting metallic design that was highly praised.

Unfortunately men think the straightest, shortest path to a destination is faster and better, whereas women believe that sometimes the curvy, bumpy road, stopping to "fix" each point along the way, is the best route. She would've gotten the message across far better if she had just spoken in Spanish.

But wasn't the question, something like "who has it easier--men or women?" I thought her question had NOTHING to do with the question asked her. I liked the way you said it, but she totally didn't make sense. "men think the easiest way to a place is a straight line, women thing the easiest way is to go curve" WTF?

I agree. I thought Miss Mexico and Miss Russia nailed their questions. With the other 3, I said huh?

I thought Mexico's answer was the best. But every one of them that greeted the crowd first before answering their question drove me crazy! To me it just looked like they were ignoring the person that asked them the question.

I forgot to mention that, but yes, I totally agree!! I mean you have, what, 30 seconds to answer the question and you are spending 10 of those seconds saying hello to Vietnam? For reals???

Ok, so it's not just me?! I was like ahhh you idiots! Every thing I've ever seen on TV about preparing to be in a beauty pageant (Made on MTV, stuff like that) showed way better answers than that. And NONE of those girls said Hi first.

My very late thoughts
-I honestly thought that Miss USA's trip was staged. It just looked it and I thought "oh she didn't". Last years Miss USA handled it so much better and made it to the top 5, I honestly think Crystle was "trying" that "luck" again. The thing though is, IMPO she isn't as pretty as last years Miss USA.
-I loved Venezuala from the start. I thought she was absolutely adorable. Mexico and Columbia grew on me, I just wasn't a fan of their evening gowns.
-as for the final question, basically I think the judges always choose someone who never answers the question correctly. I'm not sure if something is getting lost in translation but it's like these women just pull something out of their ass. I think they were saying "hi Vietnam" as a way to "stall" for time. If you noticed, the women who actually used the translator had much more than 30 seconds to respond.
-While Venezuala's answer really had nothing to do with her question, I think she tried to answer the best she could with the language barrier. I thought she did somewhat well (compared to the others).
Question- Has a Miss USA ever won Miss Universe?

Yes, Miss USA has won Miss Universe. You can do a google search of past winners. Miss USA hasn't won in the past few years, but its been close sometimes!

YES YES YES!
The most recent Miss USA to win the Miss Universe title is my hometown girl Brook Mahealani Lee in 1997. In fact, it was because of Brook that my alma mater hosted Miss Universe in 1998.
Some of you might remember her -- she was the Miss Universe after "the Miss Universe who got fat". When asked in her interview what she would do if she became Miss Universe, Brook said she'd eat everything...twice.

Really though, the language barrier is NO excuse. She had a translator she could have used, but she decided to speak in English, and she made no sense. Really, if she didn't know how to explain it in English, she could have done it in Spanish.

Check this out: the winners from the past 25 years. The pictures from the 80s are a trip!

The Miss Teen USA pageant is currently going on at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. It'll be interesting to see how this does because it's not televised.
Does anyone have a link to a good pageant board that would have updates from the prelims tonight and the finals tomorrow? We want to keep track of how our coworker's daughter does.
