Kansas recruitment

Ummm, I was actually looking for advice from girls who have gone through recruitment at K-State who could tell me how competitive it is, ect.

Even schools that are completely noncompetitive occasionally have women who would like to join a sorority who don't receive bids. Nothing is "sure" and I doubt that anyone is going to tell you that it is.

I looked at their rush site, and it looks like if you don't finish rush, you get $60 of your $225 back. The rest is paying for your room and meals during rush.

I like that idea. Women pay so much to rush these days at some schools and if they don't get a bid, they should get back any money that didn't go for actual expenses. It's bad enough that their self-esteem may have been shot to h@**.

I am a longtime lurker but have never posted before, but your KSU thread caught my eye. I went through recruitment at KSU back in 90s with similar thoughts as you. I was the first greek in my family, had no idea what I was doing, and not quite sure if it was for me. But I decided if nothing else it would be a good way to meet people before classes started. Then, as it is now, while K-State is competitive, all of the houses are quite strong and no one is too hung up on the idea of top tier houses. In my own experience, I was cut from a few houses, but got to do most of the cutting and had a full schedule each day. By the day before prefs, I could honestly say that I would have been comfortable in any of the 5 houses I had left. I was fortunate to get a bid from the house that had been my top choice throughout the week, but I still a bit concern that maybe this wasn't for me, and I decided I'd at least stick it out through initiation. Flash forward and I was eventually president of my chapter and am a highly active alum. My best friends in the house are truly like family to me. (I am 35 and we still e-mail each other every day!). And while I did have friends from home who went through rush the same year as me and did not get bids or dropped out of recruitment, they were very few or had their heart set on one house. Yet in the end they didn't regret going through recruitment and went on to have great college experiences. And in recent years, K-State has improved efforts to make sure as many girls get bids as possible. The bottom line, is just making connections before classes start gives you a great advantage at college from the start no matter the outcome. But if you have recs, have the grades, keep and open mind and best yoru best foot forward during recruitment, you will most likely find yourself a sorority home in Manhattan. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice and encouragement! Like I said, I won't be heartbroken if I don't get a bid. I just wanted to make sure that the whole recruitment experience would still be worth it even if I didn't make it into a house. I don't really see what I have to lose though. The only thing I don't have going for me are recs.....

First, I should say that recs at K-State aren't mandatory, but they do help immensely. I was lucky that my hometown panhellenic alumnae association was very active and they helped all local girls going through recruitment at various schools to get recs. I assume you are in Kansas. Depending where you are, your closest panhellenic alumnae group may do the same thing. If not, you can begin by asking women you know who are alums and at least have a good start.

Wichita State has a much smaller Greek population than KU and Kstate. I like having a small house much better because you are closer. There are 4 Panhellenic Sororities - Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, Delta Gamma, and Delta Delta Delta. Last years Formal Recruitment had about 80 girls go through, but this year we are hoping for more. Our Greek percentage on campus is much smaller currently than other [IMG]file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/Curt/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/msoclip1/01/clip_image001.gif[/IMG]It will be starting the First week of September. Information and sign up is somewhere on the WSU site. (wichita.edu)

You do not have to be from Kansas. Some of the girls are local, but some are not. WSU is an international friendly school, and having someone from out of state would be welcome and wonderful.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me more about KU Rush. Do you walk to all the houses (thinking about my footwear for the week, haha)? Are recomendations super important? I only possibly MAYBE have one for ADPi. I'm the first in my family (close and extended) to ever go greek, so I really have no clue about ANY of it and don't really know any current/past members. Any advice, anecdotes, gems of wisdom you all have would be very helpful!

At KU, there will be buses available to take prospective members around during Recruitment. The sorority houses are kind of in clusters, so there still is a fair amount of walking involved. I wouldn't suggest trying to do it in heels or any other uncomfortable shoe. Maybe you could wear a pair of comfy flip flops between events and then put on your fancy shoes for the actual event?

Recs are not required, but it is a nice way for the chapters to learn a little bit more about you. I was from out of state, and when I went through Recruitment at KU, I think that I had recommendations for a 5 or 6 of the 13 sororities. I am also the first in my family to be Greek!

Ask around, and I think that you would be surprised to find that you know more sorority alumnae than you think. Also, Alumnae Panhellenic associations are a great way to connect with sorority women. The sororities at KU are fantastic, and there are so many opportunities to get involved.
