This is great on paper, but I'm not sure how well this will work on a message board but it's worth a try. o.k. add these numbers up and tell me what you end up with. You have to scroll down after you say each number. Remember to add them together. For example: 18 + 68 then you would say 86 then 86 + 14 then you would say 100 and so on. I hope this works otherwise it'll look silly. o.k. start adding.
1000
30
1000
60
1000
10
o.k. now what's your answer. Did you get 4000 or 3100. Be honest. The correct answer is 3100. Most everyone comes up with 4000.

I guess it doesn't work on a message board. Write it down on a sheet of paper and cover each number with your hand as you ask someone to add them together. After they mention each one, scroll down to the next number until you get to the end. I'll betcha they come up with 4000.

Did you get 4000 when you first did it? If so, do you remember what tripped you up?

I got 3100, but I had to think about it. It's the number of 0's that screws people up, I think. You've got 1000 then 1000-something, then 2000-something, then 3000-something, so you'd expect it to go to 4000.
Ok, maybe that makes more sense in my head than it does written out. Lol

I got 4000 the first 3 times. I was adding in my head and well you do that, you get used to the first digit increasing (because it keeps going up by 1000) so when you get to that ten, you automatically carry the one to the 3, making it 4000, instead of carrying it to the 0. Just sloppy addition and paying to close attention to patterns than the actual math, that's all.

I did too. I think it's the message board. I'm almost positive it works better on paper. Everyone that I told about it said 4000. I've never seen anyone get 3100. With the exception of the GC members above.

I'm not sure what got me confused. I guess once I got to the end, 4000 was the 1st number that came to my mind.
