Her name is Mary Wickes (R.I.P.) and she was a phenomenal actress who played the "crotchety fiesty (and in her later years, old) woman " in many Hollywood classic! Her career spanned several decades and I remember TCM doing a special tribute to her that I watched simply because I knew that she was sister of Phi Mu. She received a degree in political science from Washington University in St. Louis and was encouraged to act by a prof. She was featured in "I Love Lucy" and understudied for the role of the Wicked Witch in "Wizard of Oz". She payed Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act I & II. She never married and died at age 85 prior to the release of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in which she was the voice of a gargoyle.

Actually, I have a follow up, too.
We have all listed famous people becasue that's what a thread like this expects I suppose.
The truth is that I have two other favorite alums.
One is Chauncy "Spike" Frisbee, a graduate of our former University of Colorado chapter in the late 1940's. I have yet to meet anyone who is more dedicated to the Fraternity.
Another is Larry Swanson, who graduated from Washington State University probably sometime in the late 1950's. He was (probably still is) our chapter advisor at the University of Northern Colorado. He took that position after our chapter at Wyoming folded. He has won the Venable Award as outstanding chapter advisor in our Western Plains Division.
Both men are members of our Distinguished Service Chapter.
There are also a couple of deceased brothers that I greatly admired -- men who gave freely of their "time, talent and treasure" as they say and who, to me, embody the spirit of our brotherhood.

For us, I would have to say:
Andy Griffith and
Mr. Rogers
(Yes, I thought Mr. Rogers was corny was when I was a collegiate, but as I got older he just got cooler and cooler to me.)

Sorry, but I'm going to have call Greek Urban Legend/Badge on the Moon on that one.
Leo the Lion predates MGM -- it was the logo of Goldwyn Studios before the merger with Metro and Mayer that led to MGM.
Leo was first used by Goldwyn in 1916. The records say that Leo was designed by Howard Dietz, who was director of advertising and publicity for Goldwyn (as well as a lyricist and librettist). He was a journalism graduate of Columbia University, which has a lion as a mascot, and it has long been speculated that the Columbia lion served as his inspiration for the MGM lion.

My favorite alumnae of my organization is my big Melissa and my pledge sister Ana. They are amazing. I also have some truly amazing runner ups as well. I also admire the women who keep the alumnae chapter running and active. (How do you like them apples!)
P.S. -I guarantee you one of them will be famous soon! (LOL)

I've forgotten -- he came to Mizzou for the Grand Prix swim meet (I guess it's a big deal) and some girls from my house had a sign that said "Phi Mu loves Micheal Phelps!" and he came over and said that he loves Phi Mus because his mom is one at some university...we have an autographed picture in our house from him! I'll ask around, though...I'm sure some of our girls remember.

2 of my favorite were from my chapter:
Lou Holtz, Kent State '58 - Coach of Notre Dame Football 1986-1996. Won the College Football National Championship in 1988.
Thurman Munson, Kent State '69 - First captain of the Yankees since Lou Gehrig, Rookie of the Year in 1970, a seven time All-Star and he was voted the American League MVP in 1976. He is the only Yankee ever to win both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards

Yo...gamma phis...are Gwyneth Paltrow and Michelle Kwan famous alums?
As a womens gymnastics fanatic, I'll go ahead and say that I think AOPi's coolest alum is Courtney Kupets. Seriously, have you seen her release moves on the uneven bars? That girl can FLY!
For us:
A sigma kappa won Roe vs. Wade. I think that's pretty big. I believe we also had the first female senator. Sigkapsweetie is changing her name to Meredith Grey as we speak, so I think she's a pretty cool alum too

That's my source. So take it at face value as in it's myspace, so not much credence.

I don't think that they were initiated, but I found a website listing them as Gamma Phi Betas. Curious, because it lists some others that are indeed Gamma Phi Beta alumnae such as as Lynn Martin and Kelli McCarty.
SWTXBelle I can pm the link if you want to see it.
