Is there a lot of rape in Geek Life?
i just finished reading the book Fraternity Gang Rape: Sex, Brotherhood, and Privilege on Campus and was wondering if there was any truth to it?
it says if you get raped it isn't good for you to tell because then your sorority will be unpopular, unaccepted, or blacklisted amongst Greek society...
i don't necessarily believe it...just wanted to get the truth from girls that are actually in sororities...
PLEASE give me a staight answer....like "YES there is a rape problem and it happens a lot" or "no not really thats just a stereotype"
that'd help a lot

Um.. if it were true, do you think we'd admit it? You have to join to find these things out.
This thread will probably be locked in fairly short order because we prefer to keep these sorts of things quiet. Outsiders just wouldn't understand.

i don't speak from personal experience, but even before i was greek i definitely noticed a trend on my campus that one particular fraternity (who will remain unamed) had a bad history of taking advantage of girls at bars. as in, people would tell me, "oh, watch out for those guys, if they offer you a ride home, don't take it" and the such. i never heard anything about direct rape, but i'm sure there were a lot of half-way consentual acts that were definitely a source of shame for girls nieve enough to let it happen. **disclaimer: i don't want it to sound like i blame the girls for "letting" it happen. but there's a big difference in being forced to do something and allowing yoursef to be taken advantage of when you're in right enough mind to know better but "don't care" because you're "tipsy". it's the line between rape and a horrible descision as far as i'm concerned. that's defintely JUST my opinion though.** anyway, i've DEFINITELY never heard anything about covering it up for the sake of your sorority's reputation. that's just disgusting and if i saw it happen i don't think i'd be active on my campus anymore.

At various campuses I am acquainted with, fraternity men (as well as unaffiliated men) have been taking more proactive roles in creating a safe environment for women. Thanks to the existence of more progressive men and outside the box thinking from various Women's Center Directors, I think things may be getting better.... at least about the stereotype.

No, I don't think it is common for fraternity men to commit rape. And if you are assaulted the popularity of your GLO should be the last thing you worry about after it happens. Report it. Seek treatment. Look out for yourself.
Even though frat guys aren't all evil rapists, you would be wise not to put yourself in situations where you are likely to be incapacitated or where your ability to clearly communicate and act on your wishes is compromised when you are around any group of people who you don't know well.
It's not that every guy is a rapist, but even if one is at your campus, you want to don't want to find yourself drunk and alone with him.

Are you joking? I really can't believe that someone would ask this.
No is the answer. No different in greek or out.

For campus wide stats, check here:
http://www.securityoncampus.org/
and if this link works, "UA" did report a few:
http://www.ope.ed.gov/security/InstI...asp?CRITERIA=C
And if you do a search under "campus rape" in any search engine I am sure you will find all
sorts of answers.
One I just found was this:
http://www.stopcampusrape.com/
And in the news of past 48 hours:
University president fired after alleged rape cover-up
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/07/16/uni...ref=newssearch
And finally, one of the things that still gives me a bad, sour taste in my mouth :
I know of one date rape that did happen in my chapter.
But as shown in above, rape does happen on campus in any kind of living group as well as it happens in general society.
I am not aware of any kind of study nor record that would show any difference between living areas and the crime taking place.
