A lot of chapters on a lot of campuses have these kinds of parties. I can't believe some of you haven't seen them before. I'm not even sure this belongs in risk management because there's no "risk" to these parties which is any different from any other party which is thrown.

Hmmmm....

I beg to differ. There's a "risk" of perpetuating dumbassness and tainting what should be an enlightening college experience. I guess we need for angry naysayers to come in a whoop some ass at these parties or for drunk frat guys to commit hate crimes while dressed as Aunt Jemima for there to be "risk."

ETA: Anything that can jeopardize an organization's standing constitutes "risk management." That includes hazing and throwing offensively themed parties.

I see these kinds of parties all of the time........from plenty of groups other than just predominately white fraternities.

For the record....i've seen two black fraternities two different times having "lets make fun of fratty white guys and their lifestyle parties." I think its quite hilarious...........though I would never cause a huge hoopla over it. If they want to throw on some Brooks Brothers, short shorts, and loafers.....drink scotch and listen to the grateful dead......more power to them. I could give two shits.

These guys threw on hoodies, dranks 40s, and ate fried chicken.......its not like they dressed up like the KKK and burned crosses. I could go to a white trash trailor park and probobly see pretty much the exact same things as what are in those pictures.

Yeah, when I was in undergrad, these were pretty common. There's a lot of PC posturing going on right now.

If this is a FACT then they are idiots. If this can be PROVEN then they should be chastised and disciplined.

If you are just ASSUMING this theme because you saw Kappas with popped collars and loafers on, then you're in for a debate.

Any questions?

You HAVE to be kidding me. Don't act like you aren't familiar with the stereotypes of blacks and think this is all mere coincidence. For an MLK party, too? This logic is why we'll keep seeing idiots throw parties like this.

I don't disagree with you-the fact that this sort of thing keeps happening is appalling - first because they had the party in the first place, and second that they failed to exercise the judgment NOT to post it on the internet. I'm ashamed that it happened at my alma mater.

I only mentioned that in my opinion, it was not sanctioned by the fraternity, because of my personal experience with this chapter, and felt it was relevant to this discussion (by virtue of the fact that we are discussing it on Greekchat). Please don't interpret my comments to be making any excuses or saying "it's OK since it wasn't a sanctioned event." It absolutely isn't OK.

No, they shouldn't be chastised and disciplined.

It's not a big deal. If they want to finally dress nicely, I'm all for it. That'd be great!

HOOORAAYYY!!
there's been slander for way worse than this. they're just as entitled to dress in this fashion as the news media is to splash their picture all over the papers

Who really cares anymore. I mean, if you're offended, be offended. Stereotypes are real, and there is a degree of truth to them. These are just some stupid kids having fun. Obviously they find things enjoyable about stereotypical black culture or else they wouldn't have a party for it. I mean, dressing up is pretty lame, but a lot of people drink corona and eat mexican on cinco de mayo. If we had a white holiday, yall could get drunk listening to Huey Lewis and go play golf. I know its different with black people because the history is distinct, but when people have white trash dress up parties, I don't think "they're making fun of me." I'm not really defending them, I don't really care. However, I think its good for people to realize that just because they're making fun of a group of people composed of your race, doesn't mean they're making fun of the race itself. I just wish this crap wouldn't end up on drudge report every time it happens.

The point is why do it all--there are other themes, there are other things you can celebrate. Why is it necessary for anyone to make fun of anyone? Its not--these are young adults, they do know better, and this is just plain stupid.

As far as saying that other cultures do it so it should be ok for us to do it--I know its cliched but "stupid is as stupid does."
