That's tacky. Keg stands and Edward 40 hands are so much classier.

I've drank beer before; I don't particularly like it, but my comment about drinking it being tacky may have been out of line. I still think, and was raised in the environment to think, that drinking ANY drink out of the bottle is tacky and just not ladylike at all. That's not saying I don't like the people who do it or wouldn't talk to them or look down on them...but I just personally wouldn't do it.
On a greek note, we're not allowed to drink out of bottles on my campus. At all. We HAVE to put it in a cup.

Oh my lawd jeebus, just when I thought it couldn't get any better (or worse). So you won't do vending machines if you're really thristy? How about bottled water? What about kool-aide koolbursts? If there's only a sip of soda left in a 2-liter, do you just turn it up, or do you get a glass for that too?

Sorry, I thought everyone would understand that I was talking about alcohol. I can't drink liquor out of a bottle or can.
Personally, though, I would rather drink out of a glass. But that's a personal preference, not a rule.

Ok, it was the last sentence that threw me off because we had that no drinking from the bottle and cans rule in elementary school. I thought your post had extended to sodas. It's odd that your campus doesn't trust college students with bottles, regardless if it's soda or alcohol.

It's cool. And I'm not sure whether or not it's a campus rule, but Phi Mus at my school aren't supposed to drink alcohol out of bottles or cans. I see boys in fraternities doing it, but never see girls in sororities doing it, so I assume the other sorority here has the same rule, whether or not the school does.

Wow weird. As far as I know we just can't drink with our letters on.

Yeah, like I said, I'm not sure if it's a Phi Mu thing or a school thing. It's probably a school thing and the boys just don't care!

Kind of a highjack: is the rule about drinking with letters a way of avoiding having people stumbling around drunk with their letters on, or is it a hold over from communities in which drinking itself was bad, bad, bad?

Used to be?
Haha, I always seem to get stuck behind a smoker walking to class. I wish more people would sit down with that...then there'd be a nice cloud of smoke to avoid instead of a moving cloud in front of me on my way to class.

Drinking beer from a can IS tacky. Mainly, because BEER THAT COMES IN A CAN TASTES LIKE SHIT. Winnie's right, it depends where you are. I don't think you should feel like you have to order wine or a mixed drink if what you really want is beer, though - that just wastes money, either yours or whoever's buying it for you.
Just as a note to the sorority girls who must poor their beer into a glass: it makes it a heck of a lot easier for someone to slip a roofie or something else into it, not to mention one of my friends got hepatitis once from drinking out a glass at a bar (if she'd left it in the bottle she'd have been fine). So good luck with that.

That's one of the main reasons why I drink beer out of the bottle. I've taken 2 friends to the hospital after they got their drinks 86'ed. I'd rather be safe and "tacky" than "classy" and drugged.
Hi, do we not watch Veronica Mars?

I believe it depends on the context. I mean, at a bar with my friends, I would never pour beer from a bottle into a glass. At a business dinner or wedding, however, I would never drink straight from the bottle.

Neither: For most GLOs, it's a myth, unless you have chapter bylaws that spesifically state it.
And yes, for those who do, it's ususally to keep people from acting like idiots in letters (although it doesn't stop those who do so sober anyway).
