The fact that he was gay was important to the musical...the song about it was not.

The only lyrics that really matter to the story are in purple. And that could have been easily taken care of with dialogue. The rest of it is all just a cheap shot at the French that's just about as funny as the "Why did the chicken cross the road" joke.
