The problem is that it does not show any respect to the fraternity. As the old saying goes, you don't call your country a cunt, and you don't call your fraternity a frat. It's plain disrespectful, especially the way most GDI's and others use it. A "frat" is something they called animal house, a fraternity is a group of men, chosen in their college days because of their adherence to common ideals and principles. Greekchat, of all boards, should understand respect and honor.

haha.

Your cultural ignorance is partly amusing and partly annoying. If the Alphas and other BGLOs prefer to use the word frat, your opinion doesn't matter. STFU

I don't expect my opinion to matter. You just showed me exactly the reason why I don't want to live in some direction from the South, known as the North, West, Midwest. No respect for the standing institutions. I'm not exactly sure what was ignorance however, would you like to elaborate?

Oh, this is funny. Of course you're unaware of your ignorance. That's precisely what it means to be ignorant of something. Honestly, are you in college?

Oh, and I forgot about this.

So, what you're saying is that not using the word "frat" is considered a standing institution?

It's funny that someone is upset that another person uses the word "frat" but his name is "ilikehazing." Call me crazy, but I think that all National organizations are against hazing... I don't think you are too concerned about what GDI think with a name like that.

And you still didn't answer my question. What is wrong with being a corporation?

THEY ARE USING IT TO REFER TO EACH OTHER NOT TO THE FRATERNITY. I HAVE NEVER HEARD AN NPHC MEMBER SAY "MY FRAT" REFERRING TO THE ORGANIZATION. IT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING.

Although he IS right in saying that "frat" as used to refer to the organization or chapter is vulgar and trashy.

Why is this? I've often heard this said before, but I've never heard anyone give a solid reason for it other than that this is just what they have been taught. If there is a defined reason why this abbreviation is found offensive, then please clarify.

Thanks!

Because "frat" has come to embody the lowest common denominator of fraternity life and is used by people who don't know what they're talking about. It's also used as a pejorative term by people who DO know better.

However, if hypothetically speaking this was not the case for NPHC fraternities, then what would this rule have to do with them? I'm just posing the argument for argument's sake. I really do want to understand.

It doesn't. ilikehazing is just stupid. He is the only one that doesn't get that it means one thing in NIC land and another in NPHC land.

It's like a fag being an English cigarette.

EXCELLENT ANSWER!

You really answered how I was ignorant, that's amazing. A typical response from this board. Generalities and stereotypes (redundant but whatever) define many answers I have gotten on this board.

As was said earlier, using the word frat usually denotes the lowest denominator of collegiate life. What connotates a "frat boy"? Selfish, rich, will use any girl for anything, meathead, blah blah, volleyball. It is interesting to note, at least on my campus, that the only fraternity guys who use the word "frat" are of the lowest tiers, of the worst fraternities on campus that are generally noted as meatheads, rapists, uninteresting, whatever. As a pledge, we were in a lot of trouble if we used the word "frat" as anything other than an adjective which can be acceptable but not to an extreme and not in a derogatory way.

Our national organizations do not represent true fraternities or honor their elitism. From my prospective, they are good for no more than insurance and uniting chapters by ritual and such. Programs such as Sig Ep's Balanced Man and Kappa Sigma's rolling pledging with what I believe is a 2 month pledge process (correct me if I am wrong, I know it is a short term) results in the National Organizations ever increasing drive for more money and more memberships, completely disregarding whether or not these men are of quality.

You said it yourself, it USUALLY denotes the lowest denominator of collegiate life, but by the very definition of the word it does not always.

Our national organizations do not represent true fraternities or honor their elitism.

Maybe yours does not, but as an outsider looking in, you cannot make that statement for all other fraternities.

Bottom line, what you see and know of on your campus does not represent what exists on all campuses across the country, and if A Phi A, or any other organization does not have a problem with using the word Frat amongst themselves, who are you to say it's wrong, it's none of your business, you are not an Alpha.
