P.S.

I am black and although I do feel that the society in general (us include) are still racist. I do feel as though sometimes we use it as a crutch. It seems as though we often place blame on others rather than do it ourselves. Now, I am in no way justifying racism or saying that is non exsistent, just saying that when will we stop complaining and start doing in spite of.
You know what youngun, I am way past the notion of blaming everything on racism. I acknowledge and accept the responsibility of what we should accomplish within our control. I have accomplished much. My daughter, an Alpha Chapter Delta, has accomplished much. So until you get into the real world miss me with your rhetoric.

Well Mam,

I am not speaking to anyone directly so please do not take this personally. I am speaking in general. Obviously whether you agree or not all of us that sit here to discuss issues such as this are somewhat enlightened. That fact you cannot deny. The problem is we are the minority. Also realize that because I am in college does not mean I am ignortant to reality and the real world. Some of us live it everyday, paying our way through college, taking care of family, and working in the community. I don't appretiate the real world comment nor was I trying to say that you personally were doing nothing. However can you deny that there is some truth in what I am saying, If not I would like to see your world and how it functions.

"I have friends who are black" is just a very common statement made that saddens me.

Obviously you missed the point of Chaos' siggy, and my explanation. I do not speak as a slave, but I do refer to our history in the first person, because as I said we still see it today.

I posted in another thread about my scoring through the roof on an IBM admissions test. What I didn't say was when my White boss told me how I did, how shocked he was. That is what I am talking about--to this day expectations of Black folx is low, whether you want to believe it or not.

Just think about it-- my use of the word folx. If I had not been Black would you have considered it a bastation of the word folks?

What does that matter? When I talk about my family history, I say "we" - i.e., "We came from Germany during the Revolutionary War and settled in Georgia" or "We lived in Dacula for a long time" or "We were poor", even though I wasn't around them. It's part of being connected to your heritage. Who are you to challenge that?

Assimilation has nothing to do with skin color. It's about customs, and culture, not about color.

You honestly think that someone who is black or dark-skinned Latina/o or Asian, or in any other way more obviously physically different from the "American" Anglo-Saxon norm, can assimilate into society in the same way that, for example someone who is Irish or German or French can? You can change your customs and your culture, and even your last name if you have to, but you are going to have a hell of a time trying to change your skin color.

And before I get further accused of being racist, I do have friends that are black, and I don't think of them any different then my white or hispanic friends, or for that matter, my Mexican husband.

So if we are articulate, we then give Erik a license to accept us. And of course we want that. To be accepted by 'the man'.

I don't think you're racist, but missing the point that if you say you have 'black', 'white', or 'hispanic' friends, it's just showing that you're not colorblind either. We're not saying that's necessarily a bad thing.

Yes. But then again, most internet slang irritates me.

AlphaFrog, "Some of my best friends are black" was a fairly common defense to accusations of racism used by bigots during the height of the civil rights era, as in "I'm not a racist, some of my best friends are black." Because of that, it's a statement that, for many of us who remember those days, brings up images of hollow claims that should be dismissed out of hand.

In saying that, please understand that I in no way mean to suggest anything about you, your views or your friendships. I'm only pointing out why someone might make a sad face at the statement.

No, I am not giving Eric license to treat me as a slave, and if he tried to in RL it would not be pretty. And I wasn't the one who brought up color blind society. I was responding to another post. I don't believe in a color blind society. I want folx to see my color and accept it.

And miss me with the "some of my best friends are" crap.

But that is not what you accused me of. You accused me of using it as slave talk. So marinate on that.

Graduate and you will. In the meantime learn how to use spell check. That will be important in the real world.
