I am sure there are lots more, but those are the ones off the top of my head...

Peggy McIntosh "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Napsack."
Whiteness isn't celebrated because whiteness is invisible. It is considered mainstream and generic. So much so that in many social realms where race "isn't an issue" or "anyone can fill this position," whiteness is the standard and this is evidenced by the decisions people make across social contexts.
No one's to blame for the perpetuation of this, so there is no "woe is us" or "shame on you all". This is ingrained in our society. When people generally say they "don't see color," they are lying. There's no need to lie. There's nothing wrong with seeing color. We're conscious human beings who see all of the categorical inequalities that we've created (Charles Tilly's Durable Inequality). It's what you think about and do when you "see color" that makes the difference.

If you all have not seen the movie "Crash" you need to. I think everyone who has an opinion on this subject would love that movie.

It's not about keeping the terrible parts of the past hidden... it's not about keeping people down.... it is about taking steps forward to try and remove the dividing line between black and white, which I think is a step toward true equality.

You're right, there shouldn't be a distinction. So, until other cultures' history is included in general history textbooks, there will continue to be a separation, unfortunately.

It is only separation when AmeriKKKans allow it to be so.
There's nothing wrong with distinction and a degree of separation. Everyone is not the same or equal, although equality and oneness should be the goals. Not sameness.
Distinction and a degree of separation are what humanity is based off of. It is when people exaggerate the disctinctions and separations that there's a problem. This can be seen all over the world but AmeriKKKa sticks out so much because we claim to be such a super power and marker of civilization and democracy.

My only issue is when people fall too far on either side. Tom is way in left field and calling people whiners and self righteous. This is coming from a guy who routinely displays poor spelling and articulation skills on this board. If he does the same off the board, you can't tell me that privilege is not salient in the year 2005.
