Arrow Check Me Out in SisterDivas Magazine

Greetings Everyone!!

Alice Walker once asked, “Is solace anywhere more comforting than in the arms of sisters?” I discovered the answer to that question on a Saturday night in April.

Breakups, job issues, relationship mayhem, financial challenges, death of a family member, health crises, and college woes – all have been less painful to bear in the company of my sisters.

Too often we hear women say, “I don’t get along with other women” or women claim that they don’t have a lot of female friends because women are shady, conniving, manipulative, jealous, etc. I count it a joy and a privilege to have held such strong, positive friendships with women that have gifted me with love and memories to last a lifetime.

In my lifetime, I have been fortunate to witness some powerful acts of sisterhood as well as be on the receiving end of sisterhood in action. The sisterhood that I am a part of transcends my membership in my sorority. It even transcends race and age. My sisterhood involves women who have had my back countless times in countless ways. From the meals cooked in college to the sisterly advice given, my sisterhood has carried me through life’s storms and triumphs.

The older I get the more priceless friendship, and sisterhood, becomes. I love to read books that celebrate sisterhood or chronicle the power of sisterhood in the midst of life’s up and downs. It confirms for me that what I experience from my sisters is not a rarity.

On a trip to New York City, not only did we shop and party, but we celebrated sisterhood. After that weekend celebration of sisterhood and love, I was compelled to reflect on just what it means to be in the company of one’s sisters. I wrote “The Sister Circle” from my personal experience but it has a universal appeal for all women who have close friendships with other women.

I wrote “The Sister Circle” as a gift to all of my friends, past and present. I also wrote it to remind women everywhere of the special love and bond that women share as friends.

To the guys, please don't feel left out! Read and share with the women in your life as well.
