I thought this was the best HP movie of all. There was no need to reveal Rita Skeeter's animagus - they didn't focus on that. The movie was already 2 1/2 hrs long. The World Quidditch Cup was just like I imagined it (with the tents) - even better when I saw the stadium. The Dark Mark was illustrated alot better than I imagined.
I didn't cry, though (but it was sad....)
worse spoiler
did anyone else hear Dumbledore's speech about remembering the friendships that were established? I wonder if the 3 schools will have to eventually combine in order to fight Voldemort?

That would be very interesting. And a reason to bring back Viktor!
One thing that I didn't really like was that they had Beauxbatons as an all-girls' school and Durmstrang as an all-boys' school. I guess I understand the reasoning for the film story, but I wasn't crazy about it.

i've been following harry potter since april '00 and i have to say i was extremely disappointed in this movie. there were some details important to future movies that were definitely left out. at the risk of spoiling i am going to refrain from saying anything further.

That's the way I remember it from the book. I recall when I read it that I wondered why Hogwart's was the only co-ed school.

I don't know about Durmstrang, but in the book there were definitely boys from Beauxbaton's.
Book 4, page 267....
"A boy in paly blue robes jumped down from the carriage...."
"Around a dozen boys and girls- all, by the look of them, in their late teens....."
It seems to just call the students from Durnstrang "people".

I would just like to say that this was my favorite movie out of series so far. My favorite book out of the series is Prisoner of Azkaban. While they did leave out parts, who wouldn't when the book is over 700 pages, I think they did an EXCELLENT job leaving all the important parts in. I didn't leave the theater feeling like they were missing important parts as I did in Prisoner of Azkaban. Just a great all around great job they did with this one!!

I DID I wanted to file a missing person report. For some reason there were a lot of important people missing.
A.P.B. for:
Dobby, Winky, Rita Skeeter's story, and WHAT THE HELL WAS BARTY, Jr. DOING IN THE RIDDLE HOUSE
I understand keeping it short but there was a lot of pertinent information in GoF that leads to OotP that is left out. I mean the only important fact left out of PoA was the origin of the Maurader's Map (i.e: How did Lupin know how to opporate the map, and why was Harry's patronus a stag?) I know the answers to these questions but someone who didn't read the book won't. (and believe me they ask). They left out SO much more. Or more to the point, they gave us a taste but we still don't know what we ate.
I thought I'd get emotional when Cedric died but it happened so fast I didn't get a chance to.
However, I must concide, it would have been too long for all the details to be there.

I guess they wanted to show the tie btwn Voldy and Barty for those who didn't read the book. The Pensieve part just seemed to clarify who he was.
Yeah - no SPEW. I like Dobby - it would've been comical seeing him with all the hats and mismatched socks. Looks like they changed actresses for Angelina, too. I was trying to figureout why Fred & George were in Harry, Ron, & Hermoine's potions class. If they're in a higher year, they wouldn't be in the same class, right?

Saw the movie yesterday. Loved it, but I have some gripes.
Leaving space just in case.
Gripe 1: The Quiddtich world cup, NOT NEARLY LONG ENOUGH!!! IMPO. I was bummed how short it was.
Gripe 2: Sirious. You didn't see him as much as we should have. That sucked.
Gripe 3: The end. Was really nothing like the book. They left out the fact that Sirious comes to see Harry. The fact that DD and Crouch and some other guy that I can't think of the name right now, are arguing about Voldemort being back. They don't believe DD. And then doesn't DD send Severus on his 'mission' at the end of GoF, because it didn't happen in the movie. They never explained the prize money (I don't even think it was mentioned) which is important to Fred and George. I guess they are going to leave the joke shop out of the next 3 movies all together.
I really didn't understand the point of Barty being in the beginning but by the end I knew it was just so they didn't have to verbally have someone explain that he was given the task. By him being in the beginning and Voldemort giving him the task, bam, we know.
My friend, who has never read the books, was only slightly confused at the beginning because it jumped around pretty quickly, but the rest of the movie (ie. after the world cup) she understood and she was fine. She's just going to read the first part of the book to understand (she would like to read the whole book but just doesn't have the time).
I loved the scene in the graveyard. Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort was pretty cool.
I'm sure I'll think of more later, once I've been awake for a bit more than 30 minutes.

I've said this to everyone who's asked me what I thought of the movie: As the HP books seem to get progressively longer, I always wondered if there'd be a point where the books got so long and detailed that a movie just wouldn't cut it. I think we've reached that point.
Not that I thought the movie was bad. In fact, if I hadn't read the books I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more. However, I left feeling sort of disappointed for most of the reasons you all have mentioned, and it kind of depresses me knowing that that was probably the best they could do.

I totally understand how people would be upset because they did leave alot out, but JK Rowling's from the beginning said that she did not want to make the movies so long that not everyone would not want to sit through them. I know true HP fans like myself would, but I believe she was also consentrating on people that haven't even read the books and never plan to, like my husband.
In that aspect you can't take a book that is over 700 pages long and fit all that into a 2 1/2 hour movie. So to take out SPEW or Rita Skitters animagi (I do admit that I would have liked to see more of the Quiditch World Cup) I did not take offence to because it wasn't pertinent to the story that they were explaining, but to take out Harry's Paronus or the explination of the Mauraders map in POA is just plan absurd to me. They might as well not have even had the Mauraders Map or the Patronus spell for that matter if they weren't going to explain it (this is just a radical statment, I am saying it sarcastically).
In the POA my husband, who has not read one HP book, was truly confused as to, "What the hell was that horse doing across the pond," as he states it or who made the Mauraders Map? In GOF the only thing he was confused with was who was the fourth person that had to be saved underwater (ie. Fleur's sister).
The reason I liked this movie is because in my opinion they took all the important parts of the book and took the time to explain them...instead of POA where they took the important parts of the book and didn't explain them (instead they put in stupid scenes where Harry, Ron and his sleep mates are chewing gum that makes them roar like lions or talk like monkeys) when that would have only took 5-10 more extra minutes of the movie to explain.
While the end was not happy and abrupt I think it just left the door open and explained to the people that have not read the book that Voldy's back and they have alot of work ahead of them.

I think the problem with PoA is that it was the shortest movie out of all of them. It was 142 minutes (to me it actually seemed shorter than that). SS was 152 and CoS was 161. To me PoA could have used the additional 10-20 minutes.
I think the writers did a pretty good job with GoF. Yes, as a person who has read the novel I would have loved to see more, but I understand that they (the writers) have to take a 500-700 page book and cut it down to 2 1/2 hours. Things are going to be cut.
I do agree though in PoA they should have told the audience the reasons behind Harry's Patronus (the stag) and the Marauders map.
The only thing I can guess is they will discuss the patronus and the map in OotP because that is when Harry has to take the occulamacy (spelling issues) lessons from Snape. So one can hope that in one of those memories it will be discussed. With OotP it will be nice to see more of Snape and company as kids. He he. Makes me wonder who they get to play a young Snape.

To respond to someone upthread... I think the reason Barty was in the Riddle house in the beginning was because they didn't go into an in-depth dialog at the end of the movie like they did in the book.
In the book, Barty's story gets a whole freakin' chapter. In the movie, maybe 5 minutes. I figured they cut from the end of the book on and decided for continuation sake... yeah.
And I discussed the whole animagi thing with my friends last night and we actually broke open book four. It's casually mentioned at the end of the book. Perhaps this is something they will focus in on for the 5th movie. (Which was the other half of our conversation.)

I just saw it this morning, and I loved it!
There were quite a few little people at the movie, but they were well-behaved. And apparently, I now live in a quiet little sleepy town where crime is unheard of - tickets were on the honor system! I saw several families where one parent took the kids into the theatre to get seats while the other parent got on line for tickets. If you wanted to, you could just waltz on in without paying. And they didn't care if you brought in outside food. Weirdness.
On to the movie itself. Some spoiler space, just to be on the safe side.
I have a few quibbles. I would have liked to have seen more Quidditch... actually, any Quidditch. It was the World Cup, for heaven's sake! We saw the opening announcements, and then cut straight to the after-game celebrations.
There was a lot left out. Yes, if you're going to cram an 700-page book into a 2-1/2 hour movie, you're going to have to cut some things out, but it felt choppy at times. I think you'd be totally lost if you hadn't read the book.
I did like the scene at the end, with Voldemort's return, and the duel. And I'm glad they left in some of the little funny scenes, like Fred and George trying to cross the Age Line.
I enjoyed... and now I want to reread the book!

I basically agree with you Auchtungbaby. I walked out of the theatre and thought that they had included most of the important parts in a clever way.
Then I had only one thought: Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the Rings (as books) was much longer, more complex, and infinitely more detailed.
And yet Peter Jackson did a hell of a job remaining accurate to the text. What he couldn't put in the theatrical release he placed in the DVD version (something they didn't do for Potter).
I have really enjoyed the Harry Potter movies, and I have read all the books, but as the books get progressively more complex, I can't help but feel we are getting robbed by not having a Peter JAckson as a Director.
Someone that isn't just going to bend the story to fit a movie forumula but rather someone that will fit the formula to maintain story integrity.
