But in this cause what has happened is some chapters that are shutdown keep operating and many people think they members but they aren't because there is no record of them at our National Office. This is sad because these people are not necessarily falsely claiming to be Brothers, but are denied the right to do so because of the chapter they joined was either shutdown or failed to send in their paperwork.

Bottom line, you should be able to verify the membership of such people. They hopefully have membership cards, and you should be able to contact your National Office to verify their membership.
SO true!!

I'd be surprised at any chapter that didn't review membership documentation prior to letting someone join a chapter.
I carry my membership card with me at all time. It's so pretty.

Sadly, yes. Never students, but two who claimed to be alumni.

One individual I met who claimed to be an alumni. I tried to get him signed up for our alumni association and become a Life Member but he was reluctent to do so. When I spoke about this person to another alumni who happened to know him, he knew that this individual had falsely claimed other things about himself. So I called our National Office to verify his membership. No record was found.

How many orgs have membership cards? When a Lambda Chi friend of mine showed me his I was a bit surprised, as Kappa Sig doesn't not have them. We got membership certificates, but nothing we could carry with us.

Luckily (as I know of) I've never encountered anyone faking to be a Kappa Sig. Then again I've never communicated sensitive information to anyone that I didn't absolutely know was a brother.

Same with us. We get a certificate suitable for framing. Hardly wallet size to show around.

I have encountered women who say they are sisters. When I check with the EO, they are sisters who have left their chapters "not in good standing". (translate they owed money and may or may not have been aware of it). I usually then contact that person and inform them. Some pay the back fees, a few have not.

I find those that have left (voluntarily withdrawn membership) say "I was a XYZ but I quit" and that part of the conversation usually ends .

see, i always find those conversations really awkward because some people ask about members or then start bashing their former organization...sometimes with their old letters on! i never really know how you go about being like "Ummm, you withdrew, can we have our letters back now?" because sometimes their leaving's not always for attitude or disciplinary reasons...

It must be something in the water

Yeah so I posted one before, but how about when someone who was terminated from your chapter shows up a year later to an event WITH your bid day shirt on!!!

It was MAJOR DRAMA. This was also the night of big sis reveals and so half of our chapter (those who had come in after her) were like "who's this girl and why is she wearing our shirt??" AND since it was an event that we did't want to cause drama, our President very graciously handled it low-key and very well.

And it wasn't like she left b/c it wasn't for her or financial problems, she just left, stopped coming and was then terminated due to not paying dues!!

Thankfully her one ally in the chapter graduated with me this spring, so hopefully it won't be an issue.

I think we all have. I was at Walgreens (Chi-town represent!!!) and this dude was like "What's up, Nupe!!!" Now I don't let anyone call em a Nupe that isnt Greek and this guy had no perry. So I went to grip him and he was like his hand was hurting . So I asked him where he pledged and he said my chapter (Kappa Phi) . So I said "What year?" He said he was a neo . I WAS THE LAST LINE THEY CROSSED AT THAT TIME!!!! I mean I should have knocked him the hell out but this time, Thank God, my sane side was thinking so I just walked away and was like, Dude, next time you lie, don't lie abotu a city chapter. ...cause I am from the city chapter.

Ohhhhhh, i know how that goes....

we had a couple girls from a group of friends in the chapter leave because of personal reasons during the first half of their senior year but they were like "Can we still come to Senior Formal?" and they were told no with an apology because they had resigned but we still appreciated all of their contributions to the chapter, etc. Then Senior Formal rolls around and a couple of the sisters signed them up as dates. It was madness and drama, i tell you...although i can understand why these girls would want to come to their formal even though they left, seeing as how they gave a lot of time to the chapter...but then again, they also benefitted in a situation where they didn't have to pay anything for an event that the rest of the chapter paid a lot of money for, including the space, food and other stuff.

I've met a lot of people who claimed to be students or alumni of my college. Some of them went to pretty elaborate lengths to front.

Just because I wear a med school sweater from your school to try and pick up girls doesn't mean I'm a bad guy.

It seems like more orgs than I thought give out the cards. Maybe it's something we'll do in the future, who knows. Always thought it was a cool idea, to be a "card-carrying member."

Although with the way I stuff things in my wallet sometimes it could get ruined, so it's probably better off I don't have one.

Our card is plastic. Like a credit card...never leave home without it.

I definitely think as groups grow they should invest in them. It aids in membership verification and it reminds us of where our money is going, lol.

We get nice certificates and plastic wallet cards, too, but I never got my wallet card. I guess I should contact Nationals and get them to send me one. I was abroad when ours came in and it was lost in the exec transition
