My chapter might not even wear white dresses.

*confused

I hope they tell us soon, we need to dress shop !

they didn`t tell us anything specific, just that it should be knee length. They also suggested if you`re.. well endowed... not to wear a tubetop because you might *pop out*.

You wore white for pinning, no? White dresses are mandatory for all SK ritual.

Heh, it's so funny.. We keep our whites a secret on our campus, so I see it up here and I'm like "AAH! Shhhh!"

I think everyone on our campus knew that we all wore whites except one chapter (ADPis I think?) for pledging. If you see a bunch of girls in all white or black and white or all black then it's either "Presents" or pledging/initiation/*insert your alum cermony here*

Its weird to me that you'd keep it a secret, I'm sure people see enough girls wandering around in all white to figure it out. Especially if you have a house/dorm floor that most girls live in. Or if its out of season!

Presents was your formal? And you had to wear white?
ugh I hate my white dress sooo much. It's majorly ugly and makes me look even paler.

I hate the fact that they don't let strapless dresses in. Strapless dresses look more prude than ones with straps. The dresses with straps that I tried on were very very low cut, whereas strapless dresses just go straight across. I have to wear a sweater over my strapless dress (which shows NO cleavage). Whereas my friends are nearly falling out of their dresses, but they don't have to wear a sweater because they have straps. It makes no sense.

Nope, Presents was our semi-formal and we wore all black Same with most of the chapters on campus (for whatever their semi-formal was). So we just all kind of knew that XYZ wears white for ritual etc.

I've always found the different dress codes standards interesting. For initiation it's pretty well laid out in the ritual chair handbook. But that doesn't mean all of the chapters adhere to that, of course. And going slightly off topic, the dress code for chapter meetings seems to vary even more wildly. Besides just requiring pin attire, my chapter used to have a rule that you had to wear nylons if it was under 75 degrees but we had a chapter consultant tell us that was completely made up and we never had to wear nylons to chapter meetings. And the chapter I advise requires shoulders and toes to be covered which was a complete surprise to me.

My chapter was pretty lax with enforcing the dress rules. Most of the girls had spaghetti strap/sleeveless dresses (mine was a halter). The did have to be completely white though (no cream allowed). We didn't enforce the hose rule either. Some sisters wore sweaters over their dresses, but usually only when they were cold. The new members often wore white skirts or white pants for pledging in but sometimes they wore sweatpants turned inside out if they couldn't find anything else. We were always told not to be seen in our whites outside of the house (i.e. girls who didn't live there changed once they arrived). It was always funny looking when we went out to have cigarettes on the porch right before initiations etc. because you could tell we were all wearing white underneath our fleece jackets/sweatshirts/etc.

My chapter was sometimes lax about the dress code for meetings until some advisers from other chapters visited. They had a talk with our advisers who then had a strict talk with us that spaghetti strap dresses & heels, strapless tops, & capri pants were NOT meeting attire. Things got stricter after that but I didn't mind. I like dressing up.

that's my chapter! hehe. i don't know how much it's changed in two years, but we were *supposed* to wear white (not ivory) at least knee length dresses. if it had less than cap sleeves you must have your shoulders covered with either a shawl/wrap or an appropriate cardigan. you had to wear nude or white hose, and all white closed toed shoes. that was the idea at least; sometimes it was enforced, other times not so much. no offense to my old chapter, but a tubetop is not my idea of appropriate ritual gear! lol

My chapter was pretty lax when I joined, but started getting stricter about 2 years ago. I was initiated in Spring 2004 in a tank top with a sheer 3/4 sleeve v-neck top and a short pleated skirt. What was I supposed to do in February when I had to find something for pledging in? Some people wore white Old Navy flip flops. No more.

Summer 2004, I continued my search, figuring a white dress was better than the outift I had. It was a nylon stretch twill halter, low cut, and short. Ugh.

Spring 2006, I took my grandlittle out shopping to help her find a white dress. I also got one for myself. This one at least was a respectable length with a hankerchief hem at the longest a few inches below the knees. But it was still a layered gauzy material and low cut with spaghetti straps.

I just bought one on ebay. It is an A-line knee-length halter with a sweetheart neckline that looks to be reasonable. We'll see when it comes in. The material looks like it is layered cotton with the top layer being thicker in some spots to create a dot pattern.

I feel like I am the only one who struggles to find a nice white dress. Maybe because I am picky. I HATE eyelet and I hate coarse linen type materials or gauze-like materials. I don't want jersey because I think it's too informal. I thought maybe I'd sew one myself, but couldn't find appropriate material or a pattern that I really liked. Now that I am an alumna, I want a more modest white dress that I would feel comfortable wearing to Convention, for example. I have a few ideas in my head of my perfect white dress but I never find one. I see tons of dresses in black that have me thinking, "Now only if it came in white..." I search on ebay, and over the summer, I swear I went to every store in the mall several times and couldn't find anything that fit the bill.

My perfect white dress would be:
1. Sateen
2. Knee-length
3. Modest scoop neck or modest v-neck (Somewhere to put my pin that is not on my boob would be good.)
4. Fitted bodice
5. Pencil, A-line or full skirt
6. No eyelet or ugly lace
7. All white of course

It sounds so simple. Why can't I find this?

Ok I am done ranting.

Don't worry. You're not the only one. I have to find a new white dress and I'm not looking forward to it. It seems like all the dresses I find are tacky, revealing, and tasteless.

My chapter was very strict on "tasteful" - but we were lax on length requirements and sleeveless/strapless, we sort of had to be. I"m sure we're not the only chapter that struggled with this - but we were in the middle of michigan with very little shopping options (closest mall was roughly 1.5 hours away) AND we didn't want to force our girls to spend a ton of money.

I was lucky enough to have my great grand big hand me down a dress
