Mario Van Peebles Plays Famous Father
BERLIN - More than 30 years after his father made a revolutionary black-power film, director Mario van Peebles also wanted to have an ethnically diverse crew on the set — but he didn't have to go to the lengths his father did.
Van Peebles, at the annual Berlin Film Festival to promote "Gettin' the Man's Foot Outta Your Baadasssss," said it was sometimes "bizarre" to play his father, Melvin, in the raucous account of how his dad made the 1971 "Sweet Sweetback's Baad Asssss Song."
"It was exciting, because we wound up making it in the spirit of the original," said the younger Van Peebles, who co-wrote, directed and stars in the film. That included having a diverse crew.
But the older Van Peebles gave a glimpse of the difficulties in making the original.
"The unions in Hollywood were all white and I wanted to use a crew of 50 percent minorities," said Melvin Van Peebles, 71. "But the unions would not allow me to do that."
His trick: He told them he was making a porn movie.
"The unions will leave you alone if you tell everyone you're doing a porn," he told a news conference at the festival.
Mario Van Peebles (news), 47, was shopping for European distributors at the festival, where his film is not competing for the top Golden Bear award. Its U.S. release is expected in May

Justin Timberlake to Act in 'Edison'
Tue Feb 10, 3:45 PM ET Add Entertainment - AP to My Yahoo!
NEW YORK - After adding the title of Grammy winner to his resume, Justin Timberlake (news) is going after another: movie star.
Timberlake will star with Kevin Spacey (news), Morgan Freeman (news) and LL Cool J in "Edison." Shooting is to begin March 8 in Vancouver, British Columbia, with the film scheduled for release next year. David J. Burke of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" will make his feature writing and directing debut.
"After many years of looking at many scripts, he's decided on what we think is a terrific project," Timberlake's publicist, Ken Sunshine, told The Associated Press Tuesday. "You can judge by the quality of the people associated with the film the direction he's headed as he begins his film career."
The 'N Sync (news - web sites) singer will play a young journalist who discovers an elite team of corrupt police. Freeman plays the veteran reporter who helps him, and Spacey plays the district attorney's top investigator.
When asked whether sharing the screen with such formidable company will intimidate Timberlake, Sunshine said, "Justin's 22. I don't think anybody has handled the kind of success he's had in their 22 years better than he has."
On Sunday night, Timberlake won Grammys (news - web sites) for male pop vocal performance for "Cry Me a River" and pop vocal album for his solo debut, "Justified." During his acceptance speech, he apologized again for causing Janet Jackson (news)'s unexpected breast display during the Super Bowl halftime show.

George Foreman Eyes Return to Ring at Age 55
DALLAS (Reuters) - Former heavyweight champion George Foreman is planning a return to the ring, saying that he wants to show he can still fight at the age of 55.
Foreman said on Tuesday in a telephone interview he has been planning a return to boxing for about a year.
The former heavyweight champ became a champion for the middle-aged when he became the oldest man to claim the heavyweight belt at the age of 45. Foreman has not fought in about seven years.
"I have been working out. My goal is to get down to 225 pounds (102 kg)," Foreman said.
Foreman said he began training on his 55th birthday on Jan. 10, 2004, and said he may have to cut out on his desserts in order to drop another 50 pounds (22.7 kg).
"It is a time for everybody to stop being afraid of being 50 or 60. It's about time that people stopped being afraid of it,' Foreman said.
He said that a lot of people he knows who are about the same age wait anxiously for the results of their yearly health examinations and do not see that they can be physically active and competitive.
"People have to understand that it can be done," Foreman said.
Foreman did not say if an opponent or a venue had been lined up, but when asked about where a bout may be fought, he replied that he has had a good time in London.
Foreman reclaimed the heavyweight crown when he knocked out Michael Moorer in 1994. He retired after losing a decision against Shannon Briggs in 1997.
Foreman has a record of 76 and 5, with 68 wins by knockout.
Foreman is known these days for his work as a boxing analyst for cable TV's HBO and for his work as a salesman for a popular line of barbecue grills bearing his name.
Foreman has recently been on TV in Texas to pitch his own line of clothes for big and tall men that is being sold at Casual Male Big & Tall stores. The Foreman line includes pants with expandable waistbands and shirt collars, as well as high tech fabrics that allow wearers to easily dissipate sweat.
The fashion collection will be taken nationwide as Foreman joins a list of celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez with their own brand of clothes.
"Mothers are going to love me because I am going to have affordable clothes for their big old 17-year-olds," he said.

411 for the week of February 9th, 2004
Janet and Jermaine stayed away. The 46th Annual Grammy Awards went on and Janet was not present. After the scandal of last week's "boobgate," Janet is laying low. She was supposed to participate in the Luther Vandross tribute, but with all the controversy surrounding her breast flashing, first she was invited, then uninvited, then invited again. Finally, she was told if she did attend she would have to apologize again on air. Janet stayed away and her boyfriend, producer Jermaine Dupri, was right by her side. In a show of support for his lady he resigned as President of the Atlanta Chapter of Naras. They help with the nominations and passing out of awards at the Grammy's. Janet's new song "Just A Little While" has been released to radio and her new album, Damita Jo, comes out on March 30th. Janet is also doing a movie for ABC, The Lena Horne Story, based on the legendary entertainer's life.
After two years the marriage is over between Natalie Cole and her husband Bishop Kenneth Duprie. Natalie who just turned 54 married the Nashville minister in an elaborate ceremony, but now the marriage is over and she is claiming irreconcilable differences. What happened? Natalie and Kenneth no longer speak and at a recent party for Oprah Winfrey the two had to be kept apart. They were sent the invitation before it was known they were no longer together and Kenneth decided to show up anyway.
Brandy's little brother Ray J is not joining the group B2K. The remaining members of the group Lil Fizz, J-Boog and Raz B say Ray J is like family to them, but he will not be joining the group. They must have realized he was too old for them.
Teena Marie's new album La Donna is coming out this spring. The long awaited album features Teena with Gerald Levert and Rick James. The first single is called "Still in Love."
Wanda Sykes is returning to television. Wanda's last show was cancelled on the Fox Network and now she's returning to television with a show on Comedy Central.
The Jackson Family has opened a new restaurant in West Hollywood. It's a soul food restaurant called Katherine's.
Star Jones from the ABC Show The View is learning how to strip. Star has been taking lessons with Puffy's mom Janice Combs learning how to pole dance and do the booty shake. ( Ok why? )
Faith Evans and her husband have entered drug rehab. A couple of weeks ago Faith and her husband, Todd, were arrested on drug possession charges after they were found with marijuana and cocaine. They are entering a 13-week program and once they finish the charges will be dropped.
ESPN has cancelled their football drama series Playmakers. The network caved in to pressure from the NFL, which didn't like how the show portrayed football players with stories about drug abuse and womanizing.
The NBA All-Star game is next weekend in Los Angeles. Outkast will be performing and Beyonce will be the halftime entertainment. Marvin Gaye's daughter, Nona Gaye, will be singing the national anthem. 20 years ago Marvin sang a version of the "Star Spangled Banner" at an NBA All-Star game. He did the song his way and it stands out as a classic. Nona's version will be performed in a similar fashion to the way Natalie Cole was with her late father Nat King Cole. Remember their version of 'Unforgettable', well Nona's voice will be blended with her dads and a digitally enhanced video will be shown along with it.
Boxing great Muhammad Ali has signed on as the new spokesperson for Adidas Sportswear. The campaign is called "Impossible is Nothing" and it will also feature Ali's daughter Laila.

This really disturbs me. Seems like ministers no longer consider marriage vows sacred. What happened to 'until death do us part' or 'let no man put usunder'?!?!

That means that it has been copied from a Yahoo news site and if you go to the actual article on yahoo, you will see that things like that are actually hyperlinks to previous articles about said topic.

He goes from record company to record company. . .
Reid Named Chairman of Island Def Jam
(AP, 02/11/2004 12:13 AM)
By Alex Veiga
Antonio "L.A." Reid, ousted from the top job at Arista Records barely a month ago, was named chairman of Island Def Jam Music Group on Tuesday, where he will oversee the label's stable of acts, including Jay-Z, Bon Jovi and Melissa Etheridge .
Reid's three-year deal with the Universal Music Group-owned label will pay him just under $10 million, according to a source familiar with the contract. He also has a one-year option on the contract.
Reid, who over his career as a music producer and label head has racked up hits with artists such as Whitney Houston , Avril Lavigne and, most recently, hip-hop duo OutKast, could earn more with contract incentives linked to his ability to generate hits, the source said.
The appointment is effective Thursday, Universal officials said.
"We couldn't be happier to be working with an executive who has the range of talents that Antonio brings to the company," Doug Morris, UMG's chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.
Reid replaces Lyor Cohen, who started Def Jam 21 years ago and left Island Def Jam last month to head Warner Music Group.
In a statement, Reid called the job "an amazing opportunity."
Reid first gained prominence in the early 1980s as a founding member of the R&B group The Deele, which featured then unknown Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. The pair built a successful production and songwriting partnership with hits for artists such as Houston, and later for the group's own label, LaFace Records, whose artists included Toni Braxton , TLC and Usher.
Reid became president and CEO of Arista in May 2000 after the company's founder and then CEO, Clive Davis, who left because of parent company BMG's mandatory retirement policy. Davis was named chairman and chief executive of BMG North America last week.
During his time at Arista, Reid oversaw the rise of new artists like Lavigne, Pink and OutKast, who made a point of thanking Reid on stage at the Grammy Awards when they won album of the year.
But Arista also had some lowlights under Reid. The follow-up album from Pink, "Try This," has sold poorly since its release in the fall; her last album, "M!ssundaztood," sold more than 5 million copies.
Reid also re-signed Whitney Houston to a $100 million contract in 2001, despite rumors of drug use and erratic behavior about the singer. Houston's subsequent album, "Just Whitney," was the poorest-selling release of her career.

I'm wondering about Faith Evans' children while she was sniffin or smokin whatever she was doing. I hope they're doing alright.
Natalie Cole and her ex-hubby seem to have some serious bitterness if they have to be kept apart. That's a shame for grown folks.
