Smile I always liked this question....

>>> SISTERFRIENDS: Which founder(s) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority do you find most appealing and why?

I'll say Ms. Lucy Diggs Slowe would be the Founder I find most appealing because she was described as such a hard worker who supported herself through school like I've done. Although I have a very supportive family, I've worked all but one year while I was in school (high school-thru-law school). So I feel like I can relate to her lifestyle in terms of time management to balance classes, work and other activities.

Also as the first President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority I see her as really being a 'take charge' person whom her sorority sisters respected especially Ethel Hedgeman. Having been the President of Student Orgs. I know its a rewarding yet difficult position to be in, so I feel like I relate to her on that level as well by going above and beyond the ordinary academic routine by taking on leadership roles.

Another thing that stands out is the respect she garnered throughout her career, while in the DC Public school and especially at Howard Univ. as the Women's Dean. As stunning the AKA stained glass window is, the window dedicated to Ms. Lucy Diggs Slowe's is equally amazing! It really lets you know just how much her life affected others. I want to leave a mark on the lives of others the way in which she did. (Wouldn't mind a window my self..lol) But her ability to reach children, college students as well as her colleagues which in an of itself is a huge accomplishment is inspiring.

There are a few of the founders that appeal to me:

Carrie Snowden:
She was described as a small, slim, gracious woman that was very eager to join the sorority( I can TOTALLY understand where she is coming from).

Ethel Jones-Mowbray:
Although she graduated with a degree in math with a minor to teach, she started a catering business. (This is me to the tenth degree. I will graduate with a degree in History with a education minor. Cooking, though, is my first love ).

I'm sure that there are many more of your founders that I can find something in common with, but these two phenomenal women are most like the woman I am, and the woman I strive to always be...

I suppose I would identify most to the late Ms. Lucy Diggs Slowe. After her mother died, she worked her way through school, and became very successful. She was known to have so many activities/projects going on simultaneously and was known for her organizational skills. She was very studious and responsible even while she was in undergrad, and was recognized for this by her faculty and peers.

I can totally relate to her being that sometimes, I feel like I took on too much independence at a young age. My peers and elders often do look at me and say, "Girl, I wonder how you manage to do it." I can see myself being a self-made success like Ms. Slowe, and becoming revered for all of my hard work.

I really think that this topic should be revived. It is nice to hear the thoughts of different people about the beautiful organizers of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,Inc.

I find Nellie Quander to be most appealing. She was dedicated to her sorority, planned the incorporation and continued the dream of Alpha Kappa Alpha.

I would say Founder Lucy Diggs Slowe. She emphasized the importance of black women studying Economics and Government (one of my majors ) so that they would have the knowledge and capability of improving the social conditions of our race...I also feel that I have the determination and drive that seems like an apparent part of Founder Ethel Hedgeman Lyle's personality...

I have a profound respect for the founders, but especially the Original group

I have to add on to what I said in my previous post. In addition to Founder Beulah Burke I also identify with Lillie Burke.

Lillie Burke & Beulah Burke were both Greek scholars and tooke the intiative to help formulate the motto--very intelligent ladies.

Also it is said that Beulah was contacted to help in nationalizing the sorority because it was known that she supported this progression.

Lillie was also known for her lovely floral arrangements. That tells me she had a bit of an artist within her and great taste--not unlike myself.

Finally the fact that these two sisters were so close reminds me quite a lot of the relationship I have with my own sisters. (sniff sniff)

The Incorporator

Although she was an Incorporator, Nellie Quander gets my vote. I can appreciate her for standing up for what she believed in and how she worked hard to make sure that the efforts of the initial founders were not lost forever.
I think it's so amazing that she just happened to be in attendance when there was discussion of the changes planned for the sorority.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc was obviously meant to be here, and Ms Quander took it to new heights by incorporating, setting up new chapters, and working at the first advisor to the Alpha Chapter.

Just like Ms Quander, I stand up for what I believe in and there will be some "discussion" if you try to change my beliefs without coming to me with some sound reasoning.

I admire Soror Nellie Quander who persevered despite the challenges and fights for what she believes in! Somehow I like to believe that I have that same spirit in me!

Good Question

I think that I am most like Soror Nellie Quander because she was so full of fire and zeal and during the conflicts of 1913 she spear headed efforts to make sure that Alpha Kappa Alpha became an incorporated body. She was a strong minded strong willed person and there are so many other accomplishments that I could list for Soror Nellie Q but I dont need to her legacy speaks for itself
