Non-Black stylist and our hair

I was able to find a happy medium between my everyday look and something "special" for the wedding. To spare her feelings I never told her that I had altered it. But, I still didn't want to take a lot of closeup pics at the wedding.

I have also gone to a white salon and had my hair layered and styled and I absolutely loved it! And yes I would go back. I don't see myself letting a white stylist do any type of chemical treatments on my hair simply because I believe that their techniques are different than what my hair is accustomed to. As for styling, I'm cool with that. Since I don't like a lot of products on my hair, all I would need are some layers and a flat iron for that wind blown look that they achieve so well .

Well, after talking with the stylist, I have decided to give her a try. She is white and has quite a few black women as clients. She told me that she has been trained to work on "our hair" and can use certain types of products specifically for our hair, if I wanted her too.

So, I have scheduled a lunch appointment . She said that I will be in and out in about an hour and a half - which before, was totally NOT possible (due to triple booking )

I'm just going for a wash and style, so I will let y'all know how it turns out.

I've heard from different friends that many white stylists give better cuts (don't know about trims).
I can't seem to find a stylist who can cut, trim, or relax my hair! It wasn't until I told my newest person NOT to try and make my hair bone straight that most of it stopped falling out. I'm still having problems with my edges and the nape.

What I need is a gay man! So many friends say that they do the best job. The best result I ever had was with a gay man. Unfortunately, I was only visiting the area to see my cousin that time.

I'm tempted to take classes to learn how to do this myself. "If you want something done right, do it yourself."

I have gotten excellent trims from white stylist because when I say trim that is what was done and I have gotten the best hair cut that I ever received from a white stylist at an Aveda salon

but you are right gay men are on point too lol

Now this is the truth. When I had a relaxer, I always did my relaxer myself. The only thing I went to the salon for was to get my hair cut (Carla, remember Rocinda? That girl could shonuff cut some hurh!!) or colored. But relaxers and styles, I had that down. Some things are just better done yourself. I used to wish I knew how to cut hair. Now I just wish I knew how to cornrow and flat-twist. Y'all wouldn't be able to tell me JACK, ya heard??

I'm glad I'm not the only one on the gay men trip! Back when I had relaxed hair, I would only trust it to gay male stylists. Now that I'm natural, there are few gay brothers who work with natural styles, so most of my stylists are women these days.

I get my hair done at Vidal Sassoon. I haven't had a white stylist do my hair there, but I have had an Asian stylist, and they all are trained to do hair in the same manner. She does a wonderful job. They don't specialize in anything eccentric. You only get straight hairstyles. They cut hair pretty well, and after blowdrying it, your hair fells so silky and moveable. I recommend it for anyone who's into straight styles.

Although I've had terrible experiences with black stylists I've always said that I would never go to a white stylists unless I've seen their work (which I require of black stylists as well-I had to after almost loosing all my hair from an over processed curl).

But now I have shoulder length locks and not too many black stylists deal with locks, so I know there's not too many non-black. I wouldn't let them touch my locks anyways, but then again I don't let too many black lockticians touch my hair.

My appointment is tomorrow over my lunch hour. Honestly, I don't have a problem per say to have a non-black person do my hair, as long as they KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING!!!

I have been burned (literally) by black stylists who call themselves knowledgeable about out hair type.

My last stylist (gay man) I used to go to only does hair twice a month (he lives in a different state), so that means that doing my hair for special occassions, hair emergencies, etc. are out of the question. It also meant spending my entire SUNDAY at the salon (because he would try to do as many heads as possible while he was here in town for 2 days). I can't tell yall how many times my appointment would be at 11 am and he wouldn't get started on my head (meaning sit in the chair) until about 2 hours later. I wouldn't end up leaving that place until about 8 or 9. And heaven forbid if I wanted a roller wrap! Then I wouldn't leave there until about 11!

Plus, the last set of highlights that he gave me broke off!

I have had one White stylist do my hair. She did good cuts and could blow it hella straight with a blow dryer and a round brush. I think I let her do touch ups and never had a problem. All my other stylists have been Black, including the one who chopped off all my hair and devasated me at 15. I have been going to the same salon for almost 13 years now. It is a husband and wife. He does chemicals and she does cuts (although they can both do eveything) They cut fantastically. They stay very much up on trends, do hair show in NY and continuing education for thier industry (which he feels a lot of Black stylists do not do enough of to keep their technique up to date). My hair is always healthy and gets compliments. They do not do natural hair though and consider themselves a relaxer center since that is what they do. I love their salon because it is small, extremely profesional and I am always in the chair the second I walk in and am out the door in no more than 90 minutes. He tracks all the clients inthe computer, knows when you recieved what ervice and make notations if anything funky goes on with your hair (starts breaking off, scalp issues, etc.) so they can try and address them. When the White salon around the corner lost water, they let them rinse clients with chemicals in their shop, those White women were in awe of the atmosphere( relaxing atmosphere, jazz paying, the most comfortable shampoo bowls EVER!) . So much so the White salon has renevated to make it more like the Black salon! That says a lot. They are more expensive but totally worth it.

I never had a white stylist do my hair and I'm prety sure i'll never will. I've been a firm believer that noone knows our hair like our people. I'm sure there are some white stylists out there that could hook it up, but I'm too afraid I'll run into someone that would leave me bald

The stylist did a GREAT job on my hair and I shall be back! My hair was soft and shiny! My scalp was not dry and parched as it sometimes gets when it blowdried.

All in all, I good experience and I will be back!

I get my hair trimmed/colored at a white salon and I think my hair stylist is wonderful. She is very attentive to my hair and never takes more than needed. However, I have a black hair dresser who actually styles my hair. Last time I let him cut my hair I HAD NONE!!!
