You know, I used to hate tampax too until I tried the tampon in question (pearl). I LOVE it. I get no leaks, I can't feel it - and I never have problems sliding it up there.
I actually was wondering the other day (I am on my period right now) if the tampon ever leaves anything in you.
****CAUTION***
When I was pulling it out of me the other day, I noticed the top of it was kind of pulled with little cotton strings coming off. It was the first time I ever noticed something like that, though.
***************
I can believe that maybe the tampax pearl might leave some fibers in you - but I am sure most of it just desinegrates after a while. I've been using the things for about 7 months now and haven't had a problem. If there was such a thing as developing an infection other than TSS, the FDA would force tampax to put it as a caution with the TSS caution.
So, I don't think the story is true. If there were people who got sick from tampax pearl, the FDA would have made tampax do something about it by now - or at least be looking into it. They wouldn't let them keep making a product where the proved cause of infection is linked directly to it.
(BTW: This isn't meant to be mean to the original poster - but I thought I would give me 2 cents since I use tampax pearl.)

OH MY GOSH IT IS YOUR FAULT!!! I have started to use the word batty lately, and I didn't know where it came from because I never used to say it or know anyone who does. I must have just read a few of your post where you use that word and kind of picked it up.
You've affected my vocabulary!! hahahaa...

Maybe there should be a warning email about that! When I was at camp back in the day, my group used to call me "Walking Webster's" because I'd be adding weird words to their vocabularies all the time.

My ex roommate talked about a product called "Instead", which are sort of like mini latex ring cups you insert. Too weird for me though.

Yup. And not particularly practical, though she said you should be able to have sex while wearing it (?!?!?!)

OB w/o applicators w/ a little dab of Wet on the sides--heaven. Anyone who's ever had tampon insertion issues should really try this.
We've discussed the Keeper and Instead here before...everyone I've talked to says that sex is okay and pretty comfortable with it. I guess once you get the hang of it, it works well.
I get the cotton problem with everything...I just thought that it was the fact that I was using too high an absorbency.

I don't mean to share my personal problems, but I've had those sorts of symptoms, if not worse....I don't believe that a tampon causes that sort of damage, but I'm still running tests and waiting to get a second opinion on my medical problems. But the one thing that came to MY mind when I first started getting those symptoms was a CYST or Endometriosis which is what ACTUALLY causes your cervex to bleed and is *possibly* causing the pain I've been experiencing.
So perhaps the cousin or whomever should get tested for those symptoms. In order to find out if she has either she'll have to have an ultrasound. Pap smeers DO NOT reveal the sort of things that chain letter referred to (from what I've been told). Cuz that's why I'm going in for a second opinion and ultrasound to find out if I have a cyst.
But if your cousin is really having those problems she should see an OBGYN for SURE!
PM me if you have questions.

ok, let's think about this for a minute...
you're using the bathroom and something comes out. it lands in the toilet right??? so how could she throw it away?????
and then she would pick it up (ew gross) and put it in a bag? shouldn't it be sitting in the water of the toilet right now?? and even if she did stick her hand in the toilet (ugh i am grossing myself out right now) and pull it out, wouldn't she then wrap it up before putting her nasty shizzle in the garbage can for mom, dad and little brother to see???
think people think.
(btw, i freaking hate urban legends. i think they're so obvious and i never figure out why people fall for them)

RedRoseSAI, I refer to those individuals, and to my cousins' wives, as "cousins-in-law."

Actually, it's not. I find it much cleaner than tampons, which always leaked for me (whichever kind I used). The first time around with Instead it took some practice, but now I can get them out without making a mess at all. You can wear them for double the time you'd usually wear a tampon, up to 12 hours. So if you have to change a tampon every 2 hours, you wear Instead for 4. The material that they're made from hasn't been found to breed the TSS bacteria like the cotton/rayon of tampons, but if you've had TSS you're not supposed to use any internal protection anyway. And yes, sex, etc., is fine with them.
PS: They're also discussed here.
