I just meant if girls in bigger houses (with or without sleeping porches/dormers/cold air/whatever else they are called) often smuggled boys in. It's entertaining to me because my chapter house was nooothing like the big houses y'all live(d) in.

A "cold air" is another term for a sleeping porch... and yeah, that's definitely a stupid question! There is obviously no visitation in a dark, cold room where 10 or 15 sisters might be sleeping at any time

My favorite stupid question that I was asked during recruitment was: "Is it true that you all have boyfriends?" I was but it was all I could do to keep from laughing at her.

Red face

Forget the stupid question, how about the stupid answer!!!

Boy, do I feel dumb now referencing "cold air" as in winter!!! Can you tell I'm from Michigan!? Although, even in our big house we didn't have sleeping porches or cold airs - although the basement was often cold....

A girl came through this formal recruitment who was just plain rude to us all because she thought we'd accept her from sheer desperation. Originally we were thrilled about her interest in us, but we came to realize she was just interested in moving into our house, away from her roommates. She talked only to our VP, and when I tried to make conversation with her throughout the various events, I was very much ignored.

Our first event was karaoke night, and she told one of the sisters flat out,"You know I'm leaving early, right." She didn't even ASK! And for the rest of the night she sat there with a scowl on her face, not participating at all and not talking to anyone, rushee or sister alike.

We had a makeover party and we all got dressed up to give the room some girly atmosphere. This same obnoxious twit looks at our VP and asks snidely,"Why are you all so dressed up?"

Our VP was at a loss for words, so she fumbled out some explanation about how we wanted to look nice to help the rushees get in the spirit of things. The idiot girl goes on with,"Yeah, but why are you so dressed up?"

Then, at the end of the night, we announced that the next night's event, movie night, would be by invite only. In the elevator, this same girl asks our traveling counselor,"Why is movie night invite only?" Our awesome TC refrained from spitting back,"So we don't ever have to see you around again!"

Awful girl, awful manners, but the rest of the bunch isn't bad at all!

Our dumb questions came from the sisters after the parties. I should mention that we had a strict policy of being very respectful of PNMs, and assuming that every PNM was the cousin, friend, roommate etc of someone in the room. It eliminated amusing and dishy comments, but also avoided hurt feelings and bad kharma. The meanest we ever got was "I'm not sure she'd be happy here" or "She seemed quiet and I think Dede frightened her, but Dede frightens everyone." (No unkind comments about PNMs allowed, but it was open house on the current sisterhood)

We didn't use photos or resumes, so most of our post-party discussion was an attempt to be sure at least 3 of us knew who each girl was before we voted: "she was the one with the Mickey Mouse watch" or "she was the finance major sitting by the kitchen". (Again, we were always careful to be kind, which sometimes limited the description)

One time, a PNM was described as "sitting by the patio door". One of the younger girls asked "who is Patty O'Dore?" I made the mistake of saying "My cousin". It got a laugh, but paid for it: for the rest of my time at the sorority, I was "Patty O'Door" instead of Pattie O'Donnell.

My roommate was active in her Greek Orthodox church, and was gushing about a PNM of Hellenic descent: "...and she's Cretan!" I was horrified: "Helen, why do you think she was stupid? I thought she seemed pretty sharp." It took Helen a minute, but she finally replied, "Cretan as in the island of Crete, where my family is from. Not creten as in moron, moron."

Note: It's a lot easier to sneak boys in when you live in a dorm and have the room right next to the stairway, not that I would know.

One year at our Panhellenic Recruitment Orientation, one young woman raised her hand and asked our VP Recruitment "So when do the sorority women rush down the hill at us?" We were all dumbfounded and looked at her like what the %#$@?

It turns out that her notoriously anti-Greek RA had told her that the sorority women all stood at the top of the biggest hill on campus and ran down the hill to where the pnms were. If a member of a sorority grabbed you, you were a member of that chapter.

The next day I called her Hall Director and reported her. She got fired.

Seriously, don't you think that there's a very long sleeved jacket in this woman's immediate future?

Not at rush, but close...

I'm at O-Fest, Marquette's big organizational fair, and I walk down the Greek aisle with the intent of saying hi to my friends in Triangle and SigEp on my way home. I get rushed by the sororities, which makes me laugh because I'm carrying a Gamma Phi Beta tote bag and wearing my lavalier. Most of them laugh it off once they realize I'm a Gamma Phi, but a girl in one house said "Well, you can rush again here." I said "No, I can't, once you're in an NPC, you're in that NPC." She had never heard of this rule and was completely shocked that upon transferring, I couldn't up and join a new sorority.

This made me laugh even harder than the girl who asked if we were a local - their Greek advisor is a Gamma Phi from my chapter.
