I've definately got a question or two as a PNM.

How strict are GPA requirements?? I had a VERY nice ACT score, and most of my grades are great, but one semester totally threw me off. I have Advanced Placement credits and some other credits I tested for, but my GPA is very pooey. My cumulative is (I think) 2.42. My first semester in college was TERRIBLE. My horse died, my grandpa got cancer, my dad entered AA, my other grandpa was hospitalized,... Second semester I made the Dean's List, but my GPA is still low. How much is that going to hurt me?

Also, I am a Christian, and I've read that a lot of GLOs have close ties with christianity. Is this true? How compatible is living a christian life and committing to a sorority?

This may sound a little shallow...but how much am I financially committing to? Is there any general guideline? Most of the sororities have houses, and I'm sure that will add to it. Do all members pay the same amount whether they live in the house or not?

I know this is a serious time commitment, but is there an average number of hours per week that I can expect? (If I do make it through rush and get a bid)

GPA requirements vary from campus to campus, sorority to sorority....usually expect somewhere between 2.0 & 2.25. Sometimes chapters expect you to have a little higher by the time you initiate and stay active.

From what I know from my GLO and what I have learned on GC, yes, almost all sororities have a Christian or spirtiual base to their rituals and values. Living a Christian life and being in a sorority are very compatible. The values are essentially the same...to be a good person.

This varies greatly. I would suggest contacting your campus Panhellenic and ask them.

This depends on the time of the year and how active you are in the sorority. I cannot speak with confidence about any campuses other than my own, so I would suggest asking around on your campus.

Hi! My daughter has been accumulating clothes for rush in August. She is very conservative in all of her choices, (she won't even try on the low jeans) but she was planning to wear an adorable, strapless sun dress on the third (skit) party day. It's made of cotton and is very fitted--she's a size one to three, so it just looks great. But now I'm afraid it's not appropriate. Cardigans might work in the deep south, but I have never seen anyone wear a sweater in August in Oklahoma. She's going to be rushing at Oklahoma State. The dress is black with cherries--is this print overdone or do you think it's too revealing? Should we keep looking? Thank you!!

Try to find a black cardi with a sort of openwork stitch. It doesn't actually have to be a sweater that keeps her warm at all - the intention is the point.

Great suggestion. She could also do a cardigan over the shoulders - I think that looks very cute with strapless dresses.

I think the dress sounds cute, as long as it's not "too revealing". Where else would she wear the dress? I can't imagine wearing a sweater in Oklahoam in mid-August...you'd fry!

I'm not sure what town you're from in Oklahoma, but if you're from the Tulsa area, has your daughter filled out a profile form with Tulsa Alumnae Panhellenic to aid in finding recs?

I would bring the sweater to cover up with inside the houses and then just carry it around between rounds. I would also just tie it around my shoulders, not wear it. Honestly, I think that if she has a conservative personality, that will show through. Since she is classy, she will add accessories and make up that are classy etc. Not to mention that her personality during conversation will demonstrate that even more. I think that if she would feel comfortable wearing that dress to another conservative summer affair (a church gathering, wedding reception etc.) than she will be fine. good luck to her and welcome to you!

WOW!! I can't believe it! I only posted my question earlier this afternoon and already I have such fabulous advice! Thank you!

I know that my daughter would wear this particular dress to a wedding reception and possibly even to Sunday morning services, even though we attend an older, conservative church. I'll keep my eyes out for a sweater.

She gets cold easily and we had not thought about it being chilly in the chapter houses. Hopefully, they will have the air conditioning on full blast to cool off everyone after being outside. However, I can just see my dear daughter huddled up in her chair shivering! When I mention this possibility, she might decide she does need a new dress. Thank you!

Hi! I thought I would make a separate post to answer the question about what sororities are in Oklahoma.

Sororities at Oklahoma State include

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Phi Mu
Pi Beta Phi
Zeta Tau Alpha

Additional sororities that I know are at OU are Delta Gamma and Alpha Phi. I'm not sure if all of the others are the same.

Delta Zeta chapters are at Northeastern, University of Central Oklahoma and (I believe) Northwestern. I've noticed a lot of DZ's posting on these boards. OSU's Delta Zeta chapter closed a few years back, and though there's talk of recolonization, it won't be until next fall at the earliest--too late for my daughter.

Chapters at Oklahoma City University include Gamma Phi, Alpha Phi, and Alpha Chi Omega. Again, DZ has attempted to recolonize at OCU, but Panhellenic says no, even though a DZ alum and her husband essentially paid for the Panhellenic apartments on campus (and a substantial part of the rest of campus, also!)

I have no idea about individual sororities at Tulsa University, though I understand the system is very strong. Thank you for everything! I'll be back!

OK, I'm new to this, but the above should be a quote from sailboatgirl--I hope it worked.

Actually, we're from the Oklahoma City area and did attend the Panhellenic tea in our area. We submitted their form and are hoping for the best, though apart from one lady that we knew personally, they didn't tell us which sorority they were with, or if they would actually submit a rec for my daughter. My daughter has a couple of very nice recs for several of the houses and we are hoping that they will be adequate.

Right now, we are sponges and are trying to gather any information that might be helpful. These boards are the greatest! Thank you for the tip!
